Senior Product Safety Engineer

Overview of the role
The RD&D Product Safety Engineer is responsible for ensuring the safe development, testing, qualification and lifecycle management of energetic and defence products by leading safety assessments, authoring safety documentation, and maintaining compliance with MOD and statutory safety requirements. The role works closely with multidisciplinary engineering and scientific teams to identify, manage and mitigate hazards, support design reviews and trials, and provide technical safety assurance throughout product development.
Responsibilities
- Lead the development and maintenance of product safety and environmental documentation in accordance with MOD standards (e.g., JSP 520, JSP 482), and national legislation (e.g., Explosives Regulations 2014, HSE guidance).
- Conduct hazard identification (HAZID), hazard and operability analysis (HAZOP), fault tree analysis (FTA), event tree analysis (ETA), and other appropriate system safety methodologies.
- Develop and maintain Safety Cases, Safety Assessment Reports (SARs), and Hazard Logs in line with Defense Standard 00-56.
- Provide input to Design Reviews (PDRs, CDRs) ensuring that safety and environmental considerations are fully integrated into the product design.
- Collaborate with chemists, engineers, test specialists, and external safety bodies to ensure safety controls are engineered, tested, and validated.
- Advise on safe handling, storage, transport, and disposal procedures for energetic materials and articles.
- Support trials safety planning and reviews, including risk assessments and range safety submissions.
- Monitor and interpret changes to applicable safety and environmental standards and legislation and ensure ongoing compliance.
- Lead internal audits and prepare safety-related inputs for external regulatory inspections or MOD reviews.
- Support training and mentoring of junior staff in safety engineering practices and regulatory expectations.
Essential Qualifications, Skills and/or Experience
- Level 6 Honours Degree or commensurate experience (Engineering, Chemistry, or other relevant discipline)
- 5 Years British residency
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards registration is advantageous.
- Knowledge of Risk Assessments
- Experience in safety engineering within explosives, defence, aerospace or high hazard industry
This role will be worked over a 4.5 day week; Monday to Thursday 08:00 – 16:45 and Friday 08:00 – 12:30.
