We are looking for an experienced and proactive Transport Manager to take responsibility for the day-to-day management, compliance and development of our transport operation.
We are a small but busy, family-run business with an established Standard National Operator's Licence, and this is a newly created and pivotal position within the company.
This is an opportunity for the right person to take genuine ownership of the transport function, lead the team, maintain high standards of compliance and safety, and help shape the future development of the operation.
You will be responsible for ensuring that our transport activities are safe, compliant, efficient and commercially effective, while providing an excellent service to our customers.
We are looking for someone who is confident making decisions, can think on their feet and enjoys working in an environment where no two days are necessarily the same. You will work closely with the Directors, operational team, workshop and the Director of Sales to ensure the transport operation supports the wider business effectively.
The Role
As the nominated Transport Manager, you will have continuous and effective responsibility for the management of the company's transport activities and Operator Licence compliance.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Managing and coordinating the day-to-day transport operation to ensure deliveries are completed safely, efficiently and on time.
- Taking responsibility for compliance with the company's Standard National Operator's Licence and all relevant road transport legislation.
- Managing the company's fleet, ensuring vehicles and trailers are properly maintained, safe, roadworthy and fit for purpose.
- Planning and monitoring preventative maintenance, safety inspections, MOTs, testing, servicing and repairs.
- Working closely with the workshop team and external maintenance providers to ensure defects are identified and rectified promptly.
- Managing vehicle defects and ensuring vehicles that are not roadworthy are removed from service until appropriately repaired.
- Maintaining accurate fleet, maintenance and compliance records.
- Ensuring all vehicles are correctly specified and maintained on the Operator Licence and that relevant licence documentation remains up to date.
- Monitoring driver licence entitlements, Driver CPC, training and overall driver competence.
- Ensuring compliance with drivers' hours, tachograph and Working Time regulations, including the appropriate downloading, checking and auditing of records.
- Ensuring daily vehicle checks and defect reporting procedures are completed effectively.
- Monitoring vehicle weights, load security and safe loading procedures, ensuring vehicles are not overloaded.
- Carrying out regular compliance checks and audits and taking prompt corrective action where issues are identified.
- Keeping up to date with changes to transport legislation, DVSA requirements and Traffic Commissioner guidance.
- Ensuring appropriate training, procedures and communication are in place to maintain high standards of safety and compliance.
- Supporting accident, incident and enforcement investigations and implementing appropriate corrective actions where required.
- Liaising with relevant regulatory bodies, maintenance providers, suppliers and other external organisations as necessary.
- Monitoring transport costs and identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce unnecessary expenditure.
- Managing parts requirements and working with the workshop team to ensure vehicles are maintained efficiently.
- Working closely with the Director of Sales and the retail arm of the business to plan logistics and ensure a smooth and reliable delivery service.
- Maintaining strong relationships with customers and resolving delivery or transport-related issues professionally and promptly.
- Leading, supporting and developing the transport team, creating a positive culture of safety, accountability and continuous improvement.
About You
We are looking for an experienced transport professional who is confident taking responsibility and making decisions.
You will ideally have:
- A valid Transport Manager CPC (Road Haulage) – essential.
- Previous experience working in a Transport Manager or senior transport management position.
- Strong working knowledge of UK operator licensing and road transport compliance.
- Good knowledge of drivers' hours, tachographs, Working Time Regulations and vehicle maintenance requirements.
- Experience managing vehicle maintenance, safety inspections, testing and repairs.
- Experience managing and developing drivers and transport teams.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a busy environment.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- A practical, solutions-focused approach and the ability to remain calm and make sound decisions under pressure.
- Good IT skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Commercial awareness and an understanding of how transport costs and efficiency impact the wider business.
- A strong commitment to health and safety, compliance and professional standards.
HGV Class 1 licence would be advantageous but is not essential.
