About Starpic Project
Starpic Project is dedicated to delivering commercial and funded activities that engage children, young people, adults, and families across the Bingham and Niddrie communities in Edinburgh. Our mission is to remove barriers to participation and create accessible opportunities that strengthen community connections, wellbeing, and personal development.
We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Volunteer Development Worker to help recruit, support, and develop volunteers while contributing to our community-based programmes, youth activities, and community café operation.
About the Role
The Volunteer Development Worker will play a key role in supporting the recruitment, training, development, and retention of volunteers across Starpic Project. The successful candidate will help create positive volunteering experiences, ensuring volunteers feel valued, supported, and empowered to contribute to community activities.
The role will also involve supporting the day-to-day operation of our community café and engaging with youth groups, helping to create welcoming, safe, and inclusive environments for local residents of all ages.
Key Responsibilities
Volunteer Recruitment & Development
- Promote volunteering opportunities through local networks, social media, schools, colleges, and community events.
- Support the recruitment, screening, interviewing, and onboarding of new volunteers.
- Deliver volunteer inductions, training sessions, and ongoing development opportunities.
- Match volunteers to suitable roles based on skills, interests, and project needs.
- Provide regular support, supervision, and encouragement to volunteers.
Volunteer Retention & Recognition
- Develop initiatives that encourage volunteer engagement and long-term participation.
- Organise volunteer recognition events and appreciation activities.
- Gather volunteer feedback to improve the volunteering experience.
Community Café Support
- Support the management and day-to-day operation of the community café environment.
- Coordinate volunteers within the café and ensure a welcoming atmosphere for customers and community members.
- Assist with stock control, food hygiene procedures, health and safety requirements, and café activities.
- Encourage community participation through café-based events and initiatives.
Youth Work & Community Engagement
- Support the planning and delivery of youth group activities, workshops, and community events.
- Build positive relationships with children, young people, and families.
- Promote participation and inclusion within youth programmes.
- Assist in creating safe and engaging environments that support personal and social development.
- Represent Starpic Project at community meetings, events, and partnership forums.
Administration & Reporting
- Maintain accurate volunteer records, databases, and attendance information.
- Support monitoring, evaluation, and reporting processes.
- Assist with gathering evidence for funding reports and applications.
- Ensure compliance with organisational policies and procedures.
About You
Essential Skills & Experience
- Experience in volunteer management, community development, youth work, or a related field.
- Experience supporting or managing activities within a community café, hospitality, or community venue environment.
- Experience working with children, young people, families, or community groups.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organisational and administrative abilities.
- Ability to motivate, support, and inspire volunteers from diverse backgrounds.
- Commitment to equality, diversity, inclusion, and community participation.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Knowledge of the Bingham, Niddrie, or wider Edinburgh voluntary sector.
- Experience delivering training, workshops, or group activities.
- Understanding of safeguarding practices and responsibilities.
- Knowledge of data protection and confidentiality requirements.
- First Aid, Food Hygiene, or Youth Work qualifications.
PVG Requirement
This post is considered Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and/or Protected Adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007.
The successful candidate will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme Update Check before commencing employment.
