What You’ll be doing
We are looking for a dedicated and supportive professional to work with care leavers and young people as they transition into adulthood and independent living.
You will undertake needs assessments and develop and review pathway plans in line with the Children (Leaving Care) Act 2000, ensuring young people’s individual needs, goals and aspirations are identified and supported. You will manage a caseload, provide ongoing advice and practical support, and help young people make positive progress in their education, employment, accommodation and wider lives.
The role involves visiting young people in their homes and places of residence both within and outside Luton, as well as participating in the Young People duty rota. You will maintain accurate records, contribute to meetings and partnership working, and ensure all statutory and departmental requirements are met.
Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people will be at the heart of the role, alongside promoting equality, inclusion and anti-oppressive practice.
What we’re looking for
You will have substantial experience of working with vulnerable young people and be confident communicating effectively with young people, colleagues and partner agencies. You will be able to coordinate support, maintain accurate records and produce clear, comprehensive reports and assessments.
You will be organised and able to use your initiative, manage competing demands and meet deadlines. You will have an understanding of the impact of discrimination on service delivery, as well as knowledge of legislation relating to care leavers and their entitlements.
Good IT skills, including the use of databases and spreadsheets, are essential. You will be committed to continued learning and professional development, able to travel within and outside the Borough, and willing to work flexibly when required. As a public-facing role, you will also need to communicate fluently in spoken English and provide clear, effective advice and support.
Application Process
Only LBC employees and LBC agency workers may apply for this position.
Because of the nature of this job, it will be necessary for the appropriate level of criminal record disclosure to be undertaken. This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and therefore applicants are required to declare all unspent cautions and convictions; and also any adult cautions (simple or conditional), and spent convictions that are not protected as defined by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (as amended in 2020). A person’s criminal record will not in itself prevent a person from being appointed to this post. Applicants will not be refused posts because of offences which are not relevant to, and do not place them at or make them a risk in, the role for which they are applying. However in the event of the employment being taken up, any failure to disclose such offence, as detailed above, will result in dismissal or disciplinary action by the Authority.
Applicants for this public-facing post will need to demonstrate the ability to converse, and provide effective help or advice, fluently in spoken English.
