Trafalgar Scientific is looking for a proactive and experienced Health and Safety Adviser to support and promote a safe working environment across the business.
Reporting to the Head of Operations, you will take responsibility for maintaining our health and safety management systems, ensuring compliance with current legislation and supporting managers and employees to embed health and safety into day-to-day operations.
This is a hands-on, site-based role requiring someone who can work confidently across different departments, identify risks and positively challenge working practices where needed.
Following successful completion of the probationary period, the role offers the option to work from home for up to two days per week, subject to business requirements.
Key responsibilities
- Maintain and continually improve the company’s health and safety management systems, policies and procedures.
- Conduct and regularly review workplace risk assessments.
- Ensure hazardous activities are assessed and appropriate preventative measures are in place.
- Maintain compliance with COSHH requirements, including activities involving storage and transport.
- Plan and carry out workplace inspections and internal health and safety audits.
- Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses, identify root causes and recommend corrective actions.
- Maintain accurate records relating to incidents, inspections, audits, risk assessments and training.
- Monitor relevant legislative changes and advise the business on any actions required.
- Deliver health and safety inductions and other relevant employee and contractor training.
- Ensure employees complete the required health and safety training and understand the risk assessments relevant to their roles.
- Monitor first aid and fire safety training and ensure suitable workplace cover is maintained.
- Support emergency planning and business continuity exercises.
- Lead and support the company’s Health and Safety Champions.
- Produce reports and updates for senior management.
- Promote a positive and proactive health and safety culture throughout the business.
- Work closely with departmental managers and employees at all levels.
Qualifications and experience
Essential
- NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, or an equivalent recognised qualification.
- Previous experience in a health and safety advisory role.
- Good working knowledge of UK health and safety legislation.
- Experience of conducting risk assessments, inspections and incident investigations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Confidence to advise and positively challenge managers and employees.
- Good organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
- Competent using standard Microsoft Office applications.
Desirable
- Environmental management qualification or relevant experience.
- Experience of delivering workplace health and safety training.
- Experience of supporting business continuity or emergency-planning exercises.
Salary
£30,000–£35,000 per annum, dependent on experience and qualifications.
