Qualification Requirement: Level 5 Childcare/Early Years qualification or currently working towards Level 5
Role Overview
We are looking for an enthusiastic, organised and caring Afterschool Room Leader to lead the day-to-day running of our Newcastle Afterschool Club.
The successful candidate will take responsibility for creating a safe, welcoming and enjoyable environment for school-aged children, while leading and supporting the staff team and ensuring high standards of care, safeguarding and supervision are maintained at all times.
Key ResponsibilitiesLeadership & Management
- Take responsibility for the daily organisation and smooth running of the Afterschool Club.
- Lead, support and motivate the Afterschool team.
- Delegate duties appropriately and ensure staff understand their roles and responsibilities.
- Maintain appropriate staff-to-child ratios and effective supervision throughout the session.
- Communicate regularly with management regarding staffing, children, incidents or any concerns.
- Support new staff, students and trainees within the setting.
- Promote positive teamwork and professional standards within the room.
Care of Children
- Ensure every child feels safe, welcomed, valued and included.
- Build positive and appropriate relationships with the children.
- Provide activities that are engaging, age-appropriate and based on the children's interests.
- Encourage children to have a voice in how their Afterschool Club operates and the activities available to them.
- Support children's independence, confidence, friendships and social development.
- Ensure children's individual needs, additional needs, dietary requirements and allergies are understood and appropriately supported.
Safeguarding & Supervision
- Maintain a strong understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures.
- Ensure children are appropriately supervised at all times.
- Recognise and respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns and report these immediately in line with setting procedures.
- Ensure safe arrival, collection and handover procedures are followed.
- Maintain accurate registers and ensure all children are accounted for.
- Complete and follow risk assessments where required.
- Ensure accidents, incidents and concerns are appropriately recorded and reported.
School Collections
- Help coordinate daily school collection arrangements.
- Ensure accurate collection lists are maintained and checked.
- Communicate effectively with drivers, staff, schools and management regarding collection arrangements.
- Ensure children are safely transferred from school to the Afterschool Club.
- Respond appropriately to any changes or issues relating to collections.
Parents & Families
- Develop positive and professional relationships with parents and carers.
- Provide appropriate feedback regarding children's time at Afterschool.
- Communicate any concerns promptly and professionally.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding children, families and staff.
Environment & Activities
- Ensure the Afterschool environment is safe, organised, welcoming and engaging.
- Plan and provide a varied programme including creative activities, outdoor play, games, relaxation and child-led experiences.
- Ensure children have opportunities to relax after their school day and are not expected to participate in structured activities at all times.
- Ensure equipment and resources are safe, suitable and well maintained.
- Promote equality, inclusion and respect for diversity throughout the setting.
Policies & Standards
- Work in accordance with Magic Kingdom's policies and procedures.
- Ensure practice meets relevant childcare Minimum Standards and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain confidentiality and comply with data protection requirements.
- Participate in staff meetings, training, supervision and professional development.
- Assist management with maintaining records and documentation required for the effective operation of the club.
Essential Criteria
The successful applicant must:
- Hold a Level 5 qualification in Childcare/Early Years OR be currently working towards a Level 5 qualification.
- Have experience working with children.
- Demonstrate the ability to lead and support a staff team.
- Have a good understanding of safeguarding and child protection.
- Be confident, organised and able to take responsibility for the day-to-day running of the Afterschool Club.
- Have excellent communication skills with children, parents, staff and management.
- Be reliable, flexible and able to work effectively as part of a team.
- Be committed to providing a high standard of care for children.
Desirable Criteria
- Previous experience in a Room Leader, Deputy or supervisory position.
- Experience working specifically with school-aged children.
- Current Paediatric First Aid training.
- Current Safeguarding/Child Protection training.
- Experience coordinating school collections or transport arrangements.
