JOB PURPOSE
The Laboratory Technician Tutor is responsible for teaching, tutoring, and supporting a cohort of learners undertaking the Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship Standard. The postholder will develop learner knowledge and technical skills, ensure progression, and liaise with workplace mentors to maximise learner success and achievement. The role is remote and 37.5 hours per week, working Monday - Friday. At times, there may be some occasional travel required.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Deliver teaching and tutoring: Provide high-quality teaching sessions, workshops, and tutorials to learners enrolled in the Laboratory Technician programme, both in classroom and laboratory settings.
- Progress monitoring: Track and record learner progression against the Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship Standard, providing constructive feedback, setting targets, and liaising with workplace mentors.
- Curriculum development: Contribute to the design, planning, and updating of course content and assessment materials to ensure curriculum relevance and compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Assessment: Conduct formative and summative assessments in line with awarding body guidelines, ensuring accurate record-keeping and timely reporting of learner progress and achievements.
- Learner support: Offer academic and pastoral support to learners, adapting teaching strategies to individual needs and promoting inclusive learning environments.
- Compliance and Safeguarding: Adhere to all organisational and statutory policies regarding safeguarding, health & safety, equality & diversity, and data protection.
- Employer engagement: Regularly communicate with employers to review workplace learning, gather feedback, and ensure the apprenticeship meets both learner and employer expectations.
QUALIFICATIONS AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Essential
- 2+ years experience working as a laboratory technician or in a closely related discipline.
- Relevant teaching, tutoring, or mentoring experience (ideally in a post-16 setting).
- Up-to-date knowledge of laboratory practices, health & safety, and the Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship Standard.
- Strong organisational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to motivate and inspire learners with varying abilities
- . Level 3 or higher qualification in a relevant scientific subject.
- Commitment to continuous professional development.
Desirable
- Regulation with the Science Council or Similar Regulatory Body
- Recognised teaching qualification (e.g., PTLLS, DTLLS, PGCE, CertEd, or equivalent). Assessors’ Award (e.g., TAQA, A1, D32/33) or willingness to work towards.
- Experience supporting apprentices or delivering workplace training.
- Knowledge of Ofsted, ESFA, or other regulatory frameworks.
- Valid registration with the Science Council
