Job Summary
The Prototyper is responsible for using technical drawings to produce functional prototypes that support the development of innovative point of sale (POS) display solutions. Sometimes developing from concept designs.
Working closely with developers and production teams, the Prototyper uses a range of manufacturing techniques, materials, and equipment to produce high-quality prototypes for evaluation, testing, and customer approval. The role requires excellent craftsmanship, problem-solving skills, and a practical understanding of manufacturing processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Interpret technical drawings, CAD models, and design briefs to manufacture prototypes.
- Produce prototype POS displays, fixtures, and retail merchandising solutions using a variety of materials including acrylic, other plastics, MDF and metals.
- Operate workshop machinery and hand tools safely and efficiently, including CNC routers, laser cutters, saws, drills, sanding equipment, and assembly tools where applicable.
- Assemble, finish, and modify prototypes to meet design specifications and quality standards.
- Collaborate with Technical Developers, Project Managers and Production teams to resolve design and manufacturing challenges.
- Provide practical feedback on manufacturability, material selection, assembly methods, and cost-saving opportunities.
- Test prototypes for functionality, durability, stability, and ease of assembly.
- Maintain an organised prototype workshop, ensuring tools, machinery, and materials are in good working condition.
- Record prototype changes and communicate improvements throughout the product development process.
- Ensure all work complies with company quality, health and safety, and environmental standards.
Skills and Experience - Essential
- Knowledge of safe systems of work in a manufacturing environment
- Experience in prototype manufacturing and acrylic fabrication.
- Ability to read engineering drawings and CAD-generated designs.
- Experience using CAD software such as SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
- Competent using workshop machinery and hand tools.
- High attention to detail and commitment to producing quality work.
- Strong practical problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Duties
- Design and develop prototypes using CAD software such as SolidWorks and AutoCAD, ensuring accurate schematics and technical drawings.
- Conduct root cause analysis to identify issues during prototype testing and implement effective solutions.
- Operate and programme programmable logic controllers (PLCs) to automate prototype functions where applicable.
- Oversee fabrication processes including plastics injection moulding, welding, assembly, and tooling to bring prototypes from concept to realisation.
- Apply GD&T principles to ensure precision in manufacturing and assembly of prototype components.
- Perform mechanical analysis and utilise engineering knowledge to optimise prototype performance.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams on continuous improvement projects to enhance prototype quality and efficiency.
- Document testing procedures, results, and modifications accurately for future reference and compliance purposes.
- Support the development of schematics and wiring diagrams for prototype systems involving electronics and automation components.
- Assist in the evaluation of materials such as plastics for injection moulding applications, ensuring suitability for intended use.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in mechanical design, prototyping, or related fields with strong CAD skills in SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
- Knowledge of plastics injection moulding processes, fabrication techniques, welding, assembly, and tooling.
- Proficiency in root cause analysis methods to troubleshoot prototype issues effectively.
- Familiarity with programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and schematic development for automation systems.
- Solid understanding of GD&T standards for precise manufacturing tolerances.
- Strong mechanical knowledge combined with practical experience in fabrication, assembly, and welding processes.
- Experience with continuous improvement methodologies aimed at enhancing product quality and process efficiency.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, schematics, and technical documentation accurately.
