To provide high-quality, person-centred care and support to residents during night shifts, ensuring their safety, dignity, comfort, and wellbeing at all times. The Senior Night Carer will lead the night care team, administer medication where trained and authorised, maintain accurate records, and respond appropriately to residents' physical, emotional, and social needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver compassionate, individualised care in accordance with residents' care plans.
- Support residents with personal care, including washing, dressing, toileting, continence care, and mobility assistance.
- Promote residents' independence, dignity, privacy, and choice.
- Monitor residents' wellbeing throughout the night and respond promptly to any concerns or changes in condition.
- Provide emotional reassurance and support to residents experiencing anxiety, confusion, or distress.
Leadership and Supervision
- Lead and supervise the night care team, ensuring high standards of care are maintained.
- Allocate duties and provide guidance and support to care staff during the shift.
- Act as the senior member of staff on duty during the night and make appropriate decisions within the scope of the role.
- Report staffing issues, incidents, and concerns to management as required.
Medication Management
- Administer medication safely and accurately in line with company policies, training, and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain medication records and report any errors, omissions, or concerns immediately.
- Ensure controlled drugs and medication are stored and handled correctly.
Health and Safety
- Conduct regular checks of residents and the care home environment throughout the night.
- Respond effectively to emergencies, accidents, falls, and medical incidents.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety, infection prevention and control, fire safety, and safeguarding procedures.
- Report hazards, maintenance issues, and risks promptly.
Record Keeping and Communication
- Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential records of care provided.
- Complete daily reports, handover notes, incident reports, and other required documentation.
- Communicate effectively with colleagues, healthcare professionals, residents, and relatives where appropriate.
- Participate in shift handovers to ensure continuity of care.
Safeguarding and Compliance
- Safeguard residents from abuse, neglect, discrimination, and harm.
- Follow all Solomon Care Limited policies and procedures.
- Support compliance with Care Quality Commission (CQC) standards and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain confidentiality in accordance with GDPR and company policies.
Person Specification - Essential Criteria
- Previous experience working in a residential care setting.
- NVQ/QCF Level 2 in Health and Social Care (or equivalent).
- Experience supervising or leading care staff.
- Good understanding of person-centred care.
- Knowledge of safeguarding, medication administration, moving and handling, and health and safety requirements.
- Strong communication and organisational skills.
- Ability to work independently and make appropriate decisions during night shifts.
- Compassionate, reliable, and professional approach to care.
Desirable Criteria
- NVQ/QCF Level 3 in Health and Social Care (or willingness to work towards).
- Experience working with older adults, including those living with dementia.
- Medication Administration qualification.
- First Aid training.
Working Hours
- Night shifts as rostered, including weekends and bank holidays.
- Flexibility may be required to meet the needs of the service.
