Kitchen Porter/Commis Chef
Location: The Courtyard Kitchen, Fitzwilliam Museum, Trumpington Road
Contract Type: Permanent Hourly (10:00 – 17:00 - Tuesday to Saturday)
Reporting To: General Manager
Pay: The hourly rate is £13.45.
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Kitchen Porter/Commis Chef is responsible for supporting the kitchen and front of house teams by maintaining a clean, organised and efficient working environment. The role also includes assisting the head chef with basic food preparation to help ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the kitchen.
The successful candidate will enjoy working as part of a dedicated back of house team and will have a positive, proactive attitude with a willingness to help wherever needed. They will take pride in maintaining high standards of cleanliness and food safety while supporting the chefs with food preparation tasks.
This is a hands-on role requiring someone who is hardworking, reliable and flexible, with the ability to adapt to the changing demands of a busy kitchen.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

- Assist the chefs with basic food preparation, including washing, peeling, chopping and preparing ingredients as directed.
- Wash up and maintain the dishwasher to ensure the kitchen operates efficiently.
- Clean and polish cutlery, crockery and glassware to a high standard.
- Maintain the cleanliness and organisation of the kitchen and food preparation areas.
- Support the kitchen team in all areas as required to ensure smooth daily operations.
- Receive and put away deliveries, ensuring stock is stored safely and correctly.
- Put away clean and polished equipment in its designated storage areas within the kitchen and counter area.
- Assist with waste disposal and recycling in accordance with company procedures.
- Maintain high standards of food hygiene, health and safety, and comply with all food safety and COSHH regulations.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Previous experience in a kitchen, catering or hospitality environment is desirable but not essential, as full training will be provided.
- A positive, enthusiastic attitude with a willingness to learn.
- Hardworking, reliable and able to work efficiently in a busy, fast-paced environment.
- Flexible approach with a "cannot do enough to please" attitude.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team as well as using initiative when required.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to maintain high standards of cleanliness, organisation and attention to detail.
- Willingness to support chefs with basic food preparation tasks and develop new kitchen skills.
- Understanding of food hygiene and health & safety practices is desirable (training will be provided if required).
- Physically able to undertake the manual aspects of the role, including standing for long periods, lifting, carrying and moving kitchen equipment and deliveries.
