About The Grace Network
The Grace Network is a series of place-based hubs, blending social enterprise with community transformation. These hubs ensure that financial success fuels deeper social impact, reinvesting surplus revenue into local initiatives, increasing staff pay, and providing essential goods and services at accessible rates.
We have three hubs across Gloucestershire based in The Old Department Store (Cirencester), Brimscombe Mill (Stroud) and Aston Down (Stroud) and one in Bedminster (South Bristol). Each site has its own unique style and atmosphere but all supporting the community.
Role Purpose
We’re looking for a skilled and thoughtful individual who enjoys variety, problem-solving and hands-on work to help us maintain and enhance our buildings across the Grace Network, ensuring they remain safe, welcoming, and inspiring for all who use them.
Working with the Hub Host at each site, the Building and Maintenance Operative will carry out day-to-day maintenance tasks across all three of our Gloucestershire hubs, contributing to the development of each site as a community space. Occasional support for planned maintenance at our Bedminster hub may also be required.
You’ll have the chance to work in very different types of spaces, from a historic department store to industrial and creative hubs, playing a key role in shaping places that genuinely serve their communities.
Key Responsibilities
- Respond swiftly to maintenance requests, keeping our hubs running smoothly.
- Undertake a range of general maintenance tasks across all Grace Network hubs, including light plumbing, fixing everyday wear and tear, and ensuring each space remains safe, functional, and welcoming.
- Support the transformation and renovation of spaces across the network, helping create inspiring and functional community environments, including the development of our hub’s seven sacred spaces.
- Work carefully within the constraints of listed and heritage buildings, ensuring all works respect historic fabric and meet conservation requirements.
- Reuse and repurpose existing materials wherever possible to reduce waste and maintain the character of each site.
- Maintain a safe environment across all sites by identifying risks, addressing hazards, and supporting the implementation of health and safety policies within hospitality, retail, and office environments.
- Assist in ensuring buildings comply with fire safety requirements, including checks and record-keeping.
- Coordinate and oversee contractors and volunteers working across the Grace Network sites, ensuring quality and safety standards are met.
- Plan and manage your time across Cirencester, Aston Down, and Brimscombe Mill, responding to the different rhythms, needs, and uses of each site.
Person Specification
Essential:
- Practical experience in building maintenance, repairs, and general upkeep.
- Interest in repurposing, reusing, and sustainable building practices.
- Good understanding of basic health and safety and fire safety requirements in buildings.
- Hands-on and proactive approach, with strong problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work flexibly and collaboratively as part of a small, multi-site team.
- Comfortable working across multiple locations and managing your own workload in a flexible, organised way.
- Have your own transport to travel between sites.
Desirable:
- Experience working with listed or heritage buildings.
- Basic understanding of building compliance and inspection schedules.
