Operating primarily across London and the South East, we specialise in maintaining and improving commercial buildings, communal heating systems, district heating networks, residential developments, civic centres, office blocks, schools, and other public-sector facilities.
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Commercial Gas Assistant Manager to support the operational delivery of our commercial gas and communal heating contracts. The successful candidate will oversee engineering teams responsible for the servicing, maintenance, repair, and installation of commercial boilers, plant room equipment, HIUs, and communal heating systems.
Working closely with senior management, you will ensure contracts are delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with client expectations while providing technical support and leadership to field-based engineers.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the day-to-day management of Commercial Gas and HIU engineering teams.
- Coordinate engineers carrying out servicing, reactive repairs, fault finding, and installations on commercial boiler systems.
- Oversee teams responsible for maintaining HIUs and communal heating systems within residential and commercial developments.
- Support planning and scheduling of planned preventative maintenance (PPM) programmes.
- Provide technical guidance and troubleshooting support to engineers in the field.
- Conduct site visits, technical audits, and quality inspections to ensure compliance and workmanship standards are met.
- Monitor engineer productivity, performance, and KPI delivery.
- Assist with recruitment, training, mentoring, and development of engineering staff.
- Ensure all works are completed in compliance with Gas Safe regulations, health and safety legislation, and company procedures.
- Liaise with clients, contract managers, housing associations, and commercial stakeholders.
- Support quotation preparation for remedial works and small projects.
- Review service reports and ensure accurate completion of compliance documentation.
- Assist with managing subcontractors and specialist suppliers where required.
- Participate in management on-call support when necessary.
Essential Qualifications / Experience
- Proven experience within Commercial Gas Engineering.
- Previous supervisory, lead engineer, or management experience within a commercial gas environment.
- Strong technical knowledge of commercial boilers, plant rooms, heating systems, and associated controls.
- Experience managing engineers working on communal heating systems and HIUs.
- Current Commercial Gas Qualifications (ACS), including relevant commercial gas modules.
- Gas Safe Registered (or previously held registration through employer).
- Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
- Experience working with housing associations, local authorities, or commercial property portfolios.
- Excellent organisational and people management skills.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
Desirable Qualifications / Experience
- Experience managing district heating or energy centre contracts.
- Knowledge of BMS controls and energy management systems.
- Experience delivering compliance-focused maintenance contracts.
- Knowledge of CAFM systems and reporting platforms.
- Mechanical or plumbing qualifications (NVQ Level 3 or equivalent).
