Our people are our greatest asset. When we feel supported and happy at work, this positivity reaches those very people we are here for, the patients. Engaged employees perform at their best and our Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) initiatives contribute to cultivate a culture of engagement. We have four staff networks, a corporate EDI Team and a suite of programmes and events which aim to insert the 5 aspirations:
Improving representation at senior levels of staff with disabilities, from black, Asian, and ethnic minorities background, identify as LGBTQ+ and women, through improved recruitment and leadership development
Widening access (anchor institution) and employability
Improving the experience of staff with disability
Improving the EDI literacy and confidence of trust staff through training and development
Making equalities mainstream
The department works closely with Rheumatology, the Pain Team and our PCT colleagues in
developing new pathways to improve patient access into secondary care, e.g. Carpal Tunnels and
Musculo-Skeletal pathways for Upper Limb, Lower Limb and Back Pain. Lewisham Hospital has been
awarded the contract to provide a community based musculo skeletal interface service. The MSK

service provides direct access for spinal, upper limb and lower limb patients. The orthopaedic
department looks after the weekly lower limb clinics as part of the MSK service.
There are daily Day Case and In-patient theatre lists, fracture clinics and trauma lists. We compare
very well with our peers on average length of stay for elective surgery and we continue to convert inpatient work into Day Case surgery and the Trust is currently 4th in England for Day Case Rates. Both
the OPD and fracture clinics are conducted in a designated area and are very busy. There are two
dedicated theatres with laminar flows for both in-patient and outpatient elective work and a third in
which trauma surgery is undertaken.
This post is important to the Trust to ensure the continuation of our excellent and busy Orthopaedic
Service and support the 18-weeks target.
Elective patients are admitted to a dedicated Orthopaedic Ward in the Riverside Building, which has
strict admission criteria. This has enabled the Trust to maximize our workload as our cancellation
rates are very low whilst ensure that infection rates are minimised. An excellent ward and outpatient
nursing team support the department.
