Job Purpose
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Accountant to support the day-to-day finance operations of the business. The successful candidate will have 1–2 years of accounting or finance experience, with strong knowledge of purchase ledger and bank reconciliations, and a desire to develop their career in accounting. This role is ideal for someone looking to begin their Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) qualification whilst gaining practical experience at work with a view to career progression with the company.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain and process the purchase ledger, ensuring invoices are accurately recorded and authorised
- Match purchase invoices to purchase orders and delivery notes where applicable
- Prepare supplier payment runs and manage supplier queries
- Reconcile supplier statements and resolve discrepancies promptly
- Perform daily, weekly, and monthly bank reconciliations
- Post bank transactions and investigate unmatched items
- Assist with sales ledger tasks including customer receipts and account reconciliations
- Support month-end processes
- Maintain accurate financial records and filing systems
- Assist with general finance administration and ad hoc reporting
- Support the wider finance team with audits and year-end preparation
Skills & Experience
Essential
- 1–2 years’ experience in an accounts, finance, or bookkeeping role
- Experience with purchase ledger / accounts payable
- Experience carrying out bank reconciliations
- Good understanding of accounting principles and double-entry bookkeeping
- Strong attention to detail and high level of accuracy
- Good Excel skills and confidence using accounting software
- Strong organisational and time management skills
- Good communication skills and ability to work as part of a team
Desirable
- Experience using accounting systems such as Sage 50 Accounts
- Exposure to month-end processes
- Studying or ready to start Association of Accounting Technicians qualification
