The opportunity
We are looking for an experienced and highly organised Workshop Controller to take day-to-day responsibility for our automotive workshop in Selby.
This is a newly created, workshop-based position offering a genuine opportunity to shape how the department operates. Working closely with the Aftersales Manager, you will coordinate the technician team, improve workflow and help create a structured, productive and supportive working environment.
As our workshop is located separately from the service reception, you will provide the vital link between the technicians, service advisors, parts department and Aftersales Manager.
Key responsibilities
- Plan and allocate work according to technician skills and available capacity.
- Maintain an efficient flow of work through the workshop.
- Monitor job progress and respond quickly to delays or technical difficulties.
- Keep service reception informed of progress and revised completion times.
- Ensure technicians record their time accurately.
- Monitor workshop utilisation, productivity and efficiency.
- Reduce idle time and maintain an appropriate pipeline of work.
- Control work in progress and help ensure completed work is invoiced promptly.
- Coordinate technical support and encourage knowledge-sharing.
- Support the development of new and less-experienced technicians.
- Work with the Aftersales Manager to implement training and development plans.
- Monitor repair quality, repeat repairs and customer comebacks.
- Maintain high standards of safety, organisation and housekeeping.
- Lead daily workshop meetings and communicate priorities clearly.
- Build positive working relationships across the workshop, service and parts teams.
About you
You will be a confident and approachable workshop professional who can bring structure, pace and leadership to a developing team.
The successful candidate will ideally have:
- Previous experience as a Workshop Controller, Senior Technician, Team Leader or similar.
- Experience within a franchised dealership or busy automotive repair environment.
- A good understanding of workshop efficiency, productivity and utilisation.
- Strong planning, organisational and problem-solving skills.
- The ability to allocate work effectively and manage changing priorities.
- Clear and professional communication skills.
- A supportive leadership style and a willingness to develop others.
- Good technical knowledge of vehicle diagnostics, servicing and repair.
- Confidence using dealer management, job-control and time-recording systems.
- A full UK driving licence.
A relevant automotive technical qualification would be advantageous. Experience using CDK, Kerridge or Keyloop dealer management systems, together with familiarity with PSA/Stellantis manufacturer systems, would also be an advantage.
