Health and Safety Manager– Plymouth

About the role:
The Health and Safety Manager is responsible for leading and promoting a positive health and safety culture across a major infrastructure project. Working closely with project teams, contractors and stakeholders, the role ensures compliance with health and safety legislation, governance requirements and industry best practice throughout the project lifecycle.
Reporting to the Project Manager, the successful candidate will provide expert advice on health and safety matters, support project planning and delivery, monitor compliance, and help embed continuous improvement across all project activities.
Key Deliverables:
- Ensure project compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation and organisational policies.
- Provide health and safety advice and guidance to project teams and stakeholders.
- Develop, review and maintain health and safety procedures and documentation.
- Review contractor risk assessments, method statements and other health and safety submissions.
- Support hazard identification, risk assessments and implementation of appropriate control measures.
- Deliver health and safety training, awareness initiatives and toolbox talks where required.
- Conduct regular site inspections, audits and compliance reviews.
- Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
- Produce health and safety reports and maintain accurate records.
- Work collaboratively with project teams, contractors and external stakeholders to promote best practice.
- Act as the primary contact for health and safety audits and compliance matters.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and lessons learned activities throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Requirements / Qualifications:
Essential:
- Significant experience managing health and safety within construction, engineering, infrastructure or similar complex project environments.
- Excellent knowledge of UK health and safety legislation, including the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM).
- Experience working across multiple stages of the project lifecycle, from design through to construction and handover.
- Strong leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience carrying out audits, inspections and incident investigations.
- Ability to develop and implement health and safety management systems and procedures.
- Excellent organisational, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities within a fast-paced project environment.
- Professional qualification in Health & Safety (e.g. NEBOSH, HNC/HND, Degree or equivalent).
- Ability to obtain or hold the appropriate security clearance where required.
Desirable:
- Membership of a recognised professional body such as IOSH or IIRSM.
- Experience working in highly regulated industries.
- Experience supporting large-scale infrastructure or engineering programmes.
- Knowledge of environmental management principles.
- Experience implementing continuous improvement and lessons learned processes.
- Experience working collaboratively with multidisciplinary project teams and contractors.
