Role Overview
As a Kitchen Assistant, you will support the day-to-day operations of our busy kitchen. You will work closely with chefs and kitchen staff to prepare ingredients, assist with food production, maintain cleanliness, and ensure all food is prepared to company standards.
This is a hands-on, fast-paced role that requires reliability, attention to detail, and a strong work ethic. You will play a key part in helping the kitchen run efficiently and ensuring high-quality food is delivered to our customers.
Key Responsibilities
Food Preparation & Production
- Assist with basic food preparation including washing, peeling, chopping, and portioning ingredients.
- Support chefs in preparing dishes across bakery, takeaway, and wholesale production lines.
- Help with assembling food items according to recipes and company standards.
- Ensure all ingredients are prepared and organised ready for service.
- Maintain consistency in portioning and presentation.
Kitchen Operations Support
- Assist with daily kitchen set-up and closing procedures.
- Ensure workstations are stocked, organised, and ready for service.
- Support with receiving and storing deliveries in line with food safety standards.
- Rotate stock using FIFO (First In, First Out) principles.
- Monitor stock levels and report shortages or issues to senior kitchen staff.
Cleanliness & Hygiene
- Always maintain a high standard of cleanliness across all kitchen areas.
- Wash dishes, utensils, equipment, and food preparation tools.
- Follow strict food hygiene, health and safety procedures.
- Ensure work surfaces, equipment, and storage areas are cleaned and sanitised regularly.
- Dispose of waste correctly and maintain a clean, safe working environment.
Food Safety & Compliance
- Follow all food safety regulations and company procedures.
- Adhere to allergen control procedures and cross-contamination prevention guidelines.
- Ensure correct storage temperatures and labelling of food items.
- Support compliance with HACCP procedures and kitchen safety standards.
Teamwork & Communication
- Work closely with chefs, bakers, and other kitchen staff to ensure smooth operations.
- Communicate effectively regarding stock levels, preparation needs, and any issues.
- Support the wider team during busy periods.
- Follow instructions from senior kitchen staff and management.
Skills & Experience Required
Essential
- Previous experience in a kitchen, catering, hospitality, bakery, or food production environment.
- Basic understanding of food hygiene and kitchen safety.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills.
- Reliable, punctual, and hardworking attitude.
- Ability to follow instructions accurately.
- Physically able to stand for long periods and carry out manual kitchen tasks.
Desirable
- Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate (or willingness to obtain one).
- Experience working in a bakery or high-volume kitchen.
- Understanding of HACCP procedures.
- Experience with food preparation or production line work.
