About the Role:
Manchester has a proud history of engineering and innovation, and at Otho Metronik Energy Systems UK, we continue that tradition by developing reliable electronic systems for smart metering, energy monitoring and industrial applications.
We are looking for a Principal Electronics Engineer who can take technical ownership of complex electronics projects from initial concept through to production. You will help define our electronics architecture, guide engineering standards and support the development of dependable products used in demanding commercial and industrial environments.
This is a senior technical position rather than an executive management role. You will remain closely involved in engineering decisions while mentoring other engineers and working with software, mechanical, manufacturing and product teams.
Why Work With Us?
The Environment:
Our Manchester office provides a professional and collaborative setting for engineers who enjoy solving practical technical problems. You will work with experienced colleagues across electronics, embedded systems, testing and product development.
Technical Ownership:
You will have the authority to influence component selection, circuit architecture, development processes and technical standards across our electronics portfolio.
Meaningful Products:
Our solutions support accurate energy measurement, equipment monitoring and improved operational efficiency for commercial and industrial customers.
Professional Growth:
You will receive support for relevant technical training, industry certifications, engineering conferences and continued professional development.
Key Responsibilities:
Electronics Architecture:
Define and review analogue, digital, mixed signal and power electronics architectures for new and existing products.
Hardware Development:
Lead schematic design, component selection, circuit simulation, PCB design reviews, prototyping and design verification activities.
Technical Leadership:
Provide technical direction to Electronics Engineers and support the development of junior and mid level team members through mentoring and design reviews.
Product Development:
Take electronics projects from requirements gathering and feasibility assessment through testing, certification, production release and ongoing product improvement.
Design Assurance:
Ensure products meet internal engineering standards and applicable requirements for electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility, reliability and environmental performance.
Failure Analysis:
Investigate hardware defects, production issues and field failures using structured root cause analysis and corrective action methods.
Cross Functional Collaboration:
Work closely with embedded software, firmware, mechanical engineering, manufacturing, quality and product management teams.
Supplier Support:
Evaluate electronic components, review supplier proposals and support decisions relating to availability, lifecycle risk, quality and cost.
Documentation:
Maintain accurate design records, technical specifications, test reports, risk assessments and production documentation.
What We Are Looking For:
Experience:
At least 7 years of professional electronics engineering experience, including responsibility for technically complex products or systems.
Technical Background:
Strong knowledge of analogue electronics, digital electronics, microcontrollers, communication interfaces, sensor integration and power supply design.
PCB Development:
Demonstrable experience with schematic capture, multilayer PCB design, signal integrity, design for manufacture and design for test.
Testing:
Experience using oscilloscopes, logic analysers, spectrum analysers, electronic loads and other laboratory equipment.
Compliance:
Good understanding of electromagnetic compatibility, electrical safety, product certification and regulated product development.
Leadership:
Previous experience mentoring engineers, leading technical reviews or acting as the senior technical authority on electronics projects.
Education:
A degree in Electronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline is preferred. Equivalent professional experience will also be considered.
Communication:
Strong written and spoken English skills with the ability to explain complex engineering decisions to technical and non technical stakeholders.
Mindset:
You are methodical, commercially aware and comfortable making evidence based technical decisions. You know when additional testing is necessary and when a design is ready to progress.
Pay: £68,800.00-£83,000.00 per year
Work Location: In person
