Forklift Driver / Recycling Operative

Job Purpose
The Recycling Operative/Forklift Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of recyclable materials, finished products, and equipment throughout the depot. The role focuses on operating forklifts and other authorised plant machinery, supporting loading and unloading operations, maintaining stock movements, and assisting with recycling processes where required.
The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring operational efficiency, site safety, and high customer service standards while supporting the company's commitment to reliable and sustainable recycling services.
Key Responsibilities1. Forklift Operations & Material Movement
- Operate counterbalance forklifts and other authorised plant equipment safely and efficiently.
- Load and unload vehicles in a safe and timely manner.
- Move recyclable materials, finished products, and stock around the depot.
- Stack, store, and organise materials within designated storage areas.
- Conduct pre-use vehicle inspections and report any defects immediately.
- Ensure all loads are secure and handled in accordance with company procedures.
2. Warehouse & Recycling Operations
- Assist with the sorting and handling of recyclable materials.
- Support production processes by ensuring materials are available when required.
- Monitor material quality and report contamination or discrepancies.
- Maintain accurate stock movement and loading records where required.
- Assist with general depot operations and housekeeping duties.
3. Health & Safety
- Follow all Health & Safety procedures and safe systems of work.
- Operate forklifts and machinery in compliance with site rules and training requirements.
- Wear PPE correctly and maintain a safe working environment.
- Report hazards, accidents, near misses, or unsafe conditions immediately.
- Participate in safety briefings, toolbox talks, and ongoing training.
4. Vehicle & Equipment Care
- Complete daily forklift and equipment safety checks.
- Maintain forklifts and equipment in a clean and serviceable condition.
- Report faults, maintenance issues, or damage promptly.
- Support routine depot maintenance and cleanliness standards.
5. Security & Compliance
- Comply with company policies, environmental regulations, and site procedures.
- Adhere to all loading, storage, and material handling requirements.
- Follow site security procedures at all times.
- Complete required training and certifications relevant to the role.
6. Teamwork & General Duties
- Work collaboratively with colleagues, drivers, and supervisors.
- Support operational requirements across the depot as needed.
- Maintain a professional, positive, and reliable approach to work.
- Assist with other duties as reasonably requested by management.

Skills & ExperienceEssential
- Valid Counterbalance Forklift Licence.
- Previous forklift driving experience within a warehouse, recycling, manufacturing, logistics, or operational environment.
- Strong awareness of Health & Safety practices.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Reliable, punctual, and hardworking.
Desirable
- Previous experience within the recycling or waste management industry.
- Experience operating loading shovels, telehandlers, or other plant equipment.
- Knowledge of stock control and warehouse operations.
Training & Development
The successful candidate may be required to undertake additional internal or external training, including plant machinery operation, Health & Safety procedures, and industry-specific certifications.
