Newlands Care Home is a small, family-run, 22-bedded care home located in Dunfermline.
We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic and creative Wellbeing Coordinator to join our team and take responsibility for planning, organising and delivering a varied and meaningful wellbeing programme for our residents.
Ideally, you will already have experience working in an Activities Coordinator, Wellbeing Coordinator or similar role, preferably within a care home or other setting supporting older people.
We are looking for someone who understands that a successful wellbeing role involves much more than delivering activities. You will need to be confident with the planning, organisation, documentation and resident consultation that goes on behind the scenes, as well as being engaging and confident when delivering activities with residents.
About you
You will have a warm, positive and engaging personality and genuinely enjoy spending time with older people.
You should be able to build relationships with residents, encourage participation and bring enthusiasm to the role without taking a one-size-fits-all approach. Some residents enjoy lively group activities, while others may prefer quieter interaction or individual activities, so being able to adapt your personality and communication style is important.
Some of our residents are living with dementia or may have difficulty communicating. You will therefore need patience, compassion and the ability to adapt activities and communication to individual needs and abilities.
Alongside being good with people, organisation is a key part of this role. We are looking for someone who naturally thinks ahead, keeps on top of arrangements and follows things through without needing continual direction.
The role
You will take ownership of the wellbeing programme, planning activities in advance and ensuring residents are offered a varied range of meaningful opportunities based around their interests, preferences and abilities.
We want our programme to continue developing and would love to introduce more arts and crafts, gardening, creative projects, baking, seasonal activities and new ideas alongside favourites such as music, quizzes, reminiscence, exercise, games and visiting entertainers.
We don't want you to wait to be given all the ideas, we would love you to bring your own.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Planning and maintaining a varied wellbeing programme several weeks in advance.
- Getting to know residents' individual interests, preferences and abilities and incorporating these into the programme.
- Regularly seeking residents' views and using their feedback to shape future activities.
- Planning both group and individual activities.
- Organising and liaising with entertainers, fitness providers, animal experiences and other external visitors.
- Helping to organise small outings and opportunities for residents to remain connected with the local community.
- Maintaining an organised forward calendar of activities, entertainers, resident birthdays and special events.
- Planning ahead for birthdays, celebrations and seasonal events.
- Liaising with colleagues in advance to ensure ingredients, materials and other resources required for planned activities are available.
- Creating attractive weekly and monthly activity planners, posters and notices and ensuring information displayed around the home remains accurate and up to date.
- Maintaining appropriate resident wellbeing and activity documentation.
- Carrying out resident and relative questionnaires and audits.
- Collating feedback, identifying themes and helping to develop action plans based on the findings.
- Taking photographs of activities, where appropriate consent is in place, and posting regular updates on our private Friends & Family page to keep relatives involved in what residents have been enjoying.
Organisation and IT Skills
Good computer skills are essential.
You will need to be comfortable creating activity programmes, posters, notices and other information and be confident learning to use the technology and activity equipment available within the home.
You will also need strong planning, organisation and time-management skills and be comfortable managing several things at once – for example, preparing next month's programme while keeping track of upcoming birthdays, entertainers, resources and special events.
You will be confident planning and leading activities independently, using your own initiative and managing your time effectively, while also working closely with colleagues as part of the wider Newlands team.
We are looking for someone who is imaginative and resourceful, who can make great use of the spaces, equipment and opportunities available within the home and come up with creative ways to keep residents engaged. We value activities that are thoughtful and meaningful to our residents – sometimes the simplest ideas can be the most enjoyable.
Experience
Previous experience working as an Activities Coordinator, Wellbeing Coordinator or in a similar role is highly desirable.
Experience within a care home, older people's service or dementia setting would be particularly advantageous.
We are looking for someone who already understands, or has experience of, the wider responsibilities involved in coordinating a successful wellbeing programme – including forward planning, organisation, resident consultation, documentation and reviewing feedback – rather than experience solely in delivering individual activities.
Driving
A full driving licence and access to a vehicle would be highly desirable.
There may be occasions when you need to collect provisions or birthday gifts, and being able to support small resident outings, such as trips to the shops or other local activities, would be a real advantage.
Hours
22.5 hour contract
Monday to Friday, 10:30am–3:30pm
There is a 30-minute unpaid break from 12:30pm–1:00pm each day, while residents are having lunch.
Some flexibility will be required to occasionally change a weekday shift to work at a weekend when we have a special event, such as our Summer Fayre or Christmas Fayre.
Rate of pay: £13.45 per hour.
If you already have experience of coordinating activities or wellbeing and are looking for a role where you can bring your own ideas, creativity and organisational skills, we would love to hear from you.
You will have the opportunity to make the wellbeing programme your own, with the support of staff and management, and make a real difference to the everyday lives of the residents at Newlands.
