Position: Grounds Maintenance Operative (Manual Labour GM)
Location: Totnes Depot, TQ9 5JD
Start Date: ASAP
Contract Duration: 1+ Months (Temporary contract)
Working Hours: 37 hours per week (7:00-15:00)
Pay Rate: PAYE: £13.69 per hour
Job Responsibilities:
- Carry out general grounds maintenance duties across parks, open spaces, highways, and other council-owned land
- Operate hand tools and light machinery safely and effectively, including mowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, and leaf blowers
- Cut grass, trim hedges, prune shrubs, and maintain flower beds and landscaped areas
- Remove weeds, litter, leaves, and other debris to ensure public areas are clean and well maintained
- Assist with planting, watering, and seasonal horticultural maintenance activities
- Perform manual labour tasks such as digging, lifting, loading, and moving materials and equipment
- Inspect outdoor areas and report any hazards, defects, or maintenance issues to supervisors
- Ensure all work is completed in accordance with health and safety procedures and risk assessments
- Maintain vehicles, tools, and equipment in a clean and serviceable condition
- Work effectively as part of a team and provide support for other environmental maintenance duties as required
Person Specification:
- Previous experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, horticulture, or a similar manual labour role is desirable
- Physically fit and capable of carrying out demanding outdoor manual work in all weather conditions
- Ability to safely operate grounds maintenance equipment and hand tools
- Good understanding of health and safety practices within an outdoor working environment
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently as well as part of a team
- Strong work ethic with attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high standards
- Good communication skills and the ability to follow instructions effectively
- Flexible approach to duties and willingness to undertake a variety of maintenance tasks
- Full UK driving licence is desirable and may be required depending on operational needs
