Role Purpose
The Bakery Hygiene Team Leader is responsible for leading the hygiene team to ensure the bakery is maintained to the highest standards of cleanliness, food safety and compliance. You will organise daily cleaning activities, support the production team, and ensure all hygiene procedures meet company standards and food safety regulations.
This is a hands-on leadership role requiring excellent organisation, attention to detail and a proactive approach to maintaining a safe and hygienic production environment.
Key ResponsibilitiesTeam Leadership
- Lead, motivate and support the hygiene team during each shift.
- Allocate daily cleaning tasks and ensure work is completed to schedule.
- Train and mentor hygiene operatives in safe cleaning procedures.
- Carry out regular performance reviews and provide constructive feedback.
- Promote a positive, professional and safety-focused working environment.
Hygiene & Food Safety
- Ensure all production areas, equipment and utensils are cleaned and sanitised to company standards.
- Verify cleaning schedules are completed accurately and on time.
- Carry out hygiene inspections and take immediate corrective action where required.
- Ensure compliance with HACCP, food safety legislation and company procedures.
- Support internal and external audits by maintaining excellent hygiene standards.
- Report maintenance issues or damaged equipment promptly.
Operational Responsibilities
- Plan hygiene activities around production schedules to minimise disruption.
- Ensure cleaning chemicals are stored, handled and used safely.
- Monitor stock levels of cleaning chemicals, PPE and hygiene equipment.
- Maintain cleaning records and documentation accurately.
- Ensure all waste is disposed of correctly following company procedures.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to improve hygiene efficiency.
Health & Safety
- Ensure safe systems of work are always followed.
- Conduct toolbox talks and promote safe working practices.
- Ensure PPE is worn correctly.
- Report accidents, near misses and hazards immediately.
- Help maintain a clean, organised and safe workplace.
Skills & ExperienceEssential
- Previous experience working within food manufacturing or bakery hygiene.
- Experience leading or supervising a team.
- Good understanding of food hygiene and food safety standards.
- Strong organisational and communication skills.
- Ability to prioritise workload and work under pressure.
- High attention to detail.
- Good written and verbal English.
- Flexible approach to working hours when required.
Desirable
- Level 2 or Level 3 Food Safety qualification.
- HACCP awareness.
- COSHH knowledge.
- Experience preparing for audits.
- First Aid qualification.
