The Job:
Working closely with the General Manager, this role provides hands-on technical and delivery leadership for the WMUK engineering function, taking responsibility for a portfolio of mechanical design and remote handling projects from concept through to completion.
The Engineering Lead combines strong personal mechanical engineering capability with day-to-day leadership of the engineering team, ensuring designs are technically sound, projects are delivered on time, to budget and to the required quality, and that all activity is carried out in accordance with health, safety and regulatory requirements for the nuclear sector.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical & Design Leadership
- Produce, check and approve robust, compliant mechanical design solutions from client and project specifications, national standards and regulatory requirements.
- Lead the technical direction of complex mechanism and special purpose machinery design, including remote handling equipment for radioactive environments.
- Review designs and drawings for suitability for manufacture, chairing or contributing to manufacturability reviews.
- Produce and verify design calculations and check own and others' design and technical solutions for completeness and correctness.
- Act as technical authority and point of escalation for the engineering team on design queries and problem-solving.
- Apply lessons learned (LFE) to new designs, and champion best practice and new technology within the team.
Project & Delivery Leadership
- Take ownership of engineering delivery on allocated projects, from order placement through to completion, co-ordinating engineering documentation and workshop activity in line with programme plans.
- Work closely with key project stakeholders and Production to plan and prioritise workshop loading, resource and material availability.
- Carry out project reviews to ensure cost, time and quality targets are being achieved, flagging risks and variances early.
- Co-ordinate internal resource and sub-contractors to allow projects to be completed to schedule.
- Maintain strong working relationships with clients, acting as a technical point of contact and providing first class service.
- Ensure equipment is designed, built and tested in accordance with customer drawings, specifications and quality documentation.
Team Leadership & People Management
- Provide day-to-day leadership, direction and mentoring for the WMUK engineering team, supporting technical development and professional growth.
- Support onboarding, one-to-ones and performance management for engineering team members in conjunction with the General Manager and HR.
- Foster a high-performance, safety-first delivery culture, leading by example on all matters relating to health, safety and quality.
- Provide the General Manager with visibility of team capability, workload and emerging skills gaps.
Commercial & Process
- Provide engineering cost and resource input into commercial bids, estimates and project budgets for review and approval.
- Monitor engineering activity against agreed budgets and resource plans, flagging variances and recommending corrective action.
- Support the implementation and consistent application of engineering processes, standards and quality procedures across projects.
- Carry out any other relevant tasks as required within the scope of the role.
Scope:
- Operates with a high degree of autonomy in day-to-day technical, delivery and team decisions, escalating commercial, strategic or significant risk matters to the General Manager.
- Motivate and lead team members effectively, ensuring people are SQEP, understand what is required, and have the relevant documentation in place to follow.
- Co-ordinate between Quality, Production and Engineering to ensure right-first time, on-time delivery of work.
- Occasional travel to other company locations and customer sites within the UK may be required.

Essential Experience, Skills & Qualifications:
- Degree level qualification in Mechanical Engineering or similar, or equivalent industry experience.
- Strong, demonstrable technical background in mechanical design, ideally including complex mechanisms and/or special purpose machinery.
- Proven experience leading or closely supporting the delivery of engineering projects from concept through to completion, to time, cost and quality targets.
- Experience providing day-to-day guidance, mentoring or line management to other engineers.
- Excellent knowledge of 3D CAD systems (preferably Autodesk Inventor) and associated 2D manufacturing drawings.
- Knowledge of GD&T to BS8888:2020.
- Able to interpret mechanical drawings, work instructions and produce/verify design calculations.
- Commercial awareness, including the ability to prioritise workshop loading, manage resource and contribute to project budgets.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to present technical topics clearly to a range of audiences.
- Team leadership experience
- Willingness to represent the company at client sites, conferences and exhibitions.
- Proficient user of Microsoft Office.
Desirable Experience, Skills, and Qualifications
- Experience in remote handling equipment design or design for a radioactive/nuclear environment.
- Knowledge of New Product Development processes and concepting from a 'clean sheet of paper'.
- Formal people management.
- Knowledge of project management application and process, including experience of MS Project.
- Experience providing engineering cost/resource input into commercial bids and estimates.
Pay: £60,000.00-£70,000.00 per year
