SEN Preschool Assistant
About the Role
We are looking for a caring, patient, and dedicated SEN Preschool Assistant to support young children with additional needs, including Autism and Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD), within our preschool setting.
This role is ideally suited to someone with previous experience supporting children with Special Educational Needs and who understands the importance of structured, nurturing, and child-centred support strategies.
This is a 10-month contracted position. Salary is paid monthly and includes payment during bank holidays and agreed school closure periods within the contract term.
Main Duties
- Support the Teacher in delivering activities tailored to each child’s individual needs
- Provide support for children with additional needs during play, learning, and daily routines
- Use strategies such as:
- Visual timetables
- Now and next boards
- Sensory circuits
- Simple communication supports
- Positive behaviour support approaches
- Encourage children’s communication, confidence, independence, and social development
- Help children regulate emotions and transitions throughout the day
- Assist with snack/lunch times, toileting, and rest routines where required
- Observe children’s progress and share information with staff
- Help maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming learning environment
- Work positively as part of the preschool team
Essential Skills & Experience
- Experience working with young children with additional needs is essential
- Knowledge and practical experience supporting children with Autism and developmental delays
- Understanding of visual supports, sensory regulation strategies, and structured routines
- Ability to adapt activities to meet individual learning and sensory needs
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- Calm, patient, and nurturing approach
- Ability to build positive relationships with children and families
