Hours: Bank / 15–20 hours per week (covering planned leave, sickness, and busy periods)

About the Role
We are looking for a flexible and reliable Bank Cook to join our friendly team at The Thorns. You will provide cover during staff holidays, sickness, and busy periods, preparing breakfast and lunch only for our 13 residents.
Meals at The Thorns are simple, traditional, and comforting, and we value cooks who take pride in producing home‑style food that feels familiar and nourishing.

The Thorns is a warm, family‑run residential home set within peaceful grounds in Hest Bank. We support older adults with lower residential needs and place great importance on kindness, dignity, and a calm, homely atmosphere. Our kitchen is a central part of daily life, and residents appreciate good food and friendly conversation.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and cook breakfast and lunch when covering shifts
- Cater for dietary needs, allergies, and individual preferences
- Maintain excellent food hygiene and kitchen cleanliness
- Follow established menus or create simple, varied meals when required
- Work closely with care staff to ensure smooth mealtimes
- Monitor stock levels and report any shortages
About You
We are looking for someone who is:
- Warm, approachable, and resident‑focused
- Confident preparing traditional, home‑style meals
- Organised, tidy, and able to work independently
- Knowledgeable about food hygiene and safe kitchen practices
- Flexible, dependable, and comfortable covering shifts at short notice
Experience:
- Previous cooking experience is essential
- Experience in a care setting is helpful but not required
- Food Hygiene certification preferred (or willingness to complete training)
