A new opportunity has risen to join our friendly team for the post of Specialist in Gastroenterology and General Medicine. The post is funded for 10 PAs. The post-holder will provide their expertise and work alongside Gastro consultant colleagues
The appointee will join a department, which includes 8 Consultants with a wide variety of specialist interests The creation of this new post is related to the need to meet requirements of waiting list targets, increased clinical activity and improving the quality and timely provision of specialist Gastroenterology service in this busy hospital department. The appointee will be expected to help see in clinic outpatient gastroenterology and liver patients. Additionally, the appointee will be expected to provide a full range of therapeutic endoscopy especially for achieving haemostasis. The appointee will provide a high standard of care to the Gastroenterology patients and give consultant opinion, guidance and advice on any patient referred to the department.

The Gastroenterology and GIM Department has a dedicated ward (Ward F9 and F12) for care of patients with gastro-hepatological and acute medical problems. The staff office houses the entire complement of the medical Gastroenterology Department which facilitates a team approach to the management of our patients. The Team holds a weekly meeting for consultant supervised audit and education.
The Department of Surgery has the following Consultant staff with a special interest in colorectal surgery and colonoscopy: Mr Justin Alberts, Mr Nick Ward, Mr Neil Keeling, Mr Ian Lord, Mr Boby Sebastian, Mr Thomas Athisayaraj & Miss Jola Olugbemi. The following Consultant Surgeons have a special interest in upper GI surgery: Mr Dermot O’Riordan, Mr Craig Vickery, Miss Antonia Wells and Mr Krash Patel.
There are three nurse endoscopists, colorectal nurse specialists, one nutrition nurse specialist, one upper GI cancer nurse specialist, three IBD nurse specialist and two liver nurse specialists.
Endoscopy services are based on site in a new modern purpose-built unit. Endoscopy lists are shared between the gastroenterologists, GI surgeons and the nurse endoscopists. There is generic pooling of lists between surgeons and physicians offering a mixture of diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy and colonoscopy. ERCP is performed by Dr Whalley, Dr Mawas and Mr O’Riordan. Therapeutic procedures include endoscopic polypectomy, oesophageal variceal banding, oesophageal metal stent insertion, dilatation of benign stricture, and argon plasma coagulation of vascular abnormalities.
