Exercise Class Tutor (Adults Aged 50+)
We are looking for a friendly, knowledgeable, and adaptable Exercise Class Tutor to deliver a welcoming weekly functional fitness class for adults aged 50 and over.
Hours per week: 1 hour of class delivery, with additional preparation and basic administration as required.
Current session time:
Tuesdays | 6:30pm–7:30pm
We are happy to consider another suitable day or time where the tutor is not available during the current session time.
The class currently has approximately 7–10 participants with a range of abilities. The main focus is to help participants improve their strength, balance, endurance, mobility, confidence, and independence in everyday life.
The tutor will have freedom to plan and deliver sessions using their own teaching style, provided that the sessions are safe, inclusive, and cover the main areas of functional strength, balance, and endurance.
Requirements
Tutors will be expected to:
- Be registered as self-employed with HMRC, or be willing to register.
- Hold appropriate Public Liability Insurance.
- Hold a suitable fitness, exercise, movement, or physical activity qualification.
- Have an appropriate understanding of safely adapting exercises for adults aged 50 and over.
- Be able to carry out basic pre-exercise health screening and identify when exercises may need to be adapted.
- Hold an appropriate first aid qualification, or be willing to obtain one.
Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver an engaging one-hour weekly exercise class.
- Provide a suitable warm-up and cool-down.
- Include exercises that support upper-body, lower-body, core, and functional strength.
- Include balance and stability exercises that may help reduce the risk of falls.
- Include endurance and mobility activities that support everyday movement and independence.
- Adapt exercises for participants with different abilities, including chair-based and standing options.
- Welcome new participants and send a brief introductory email before their first session.
- Maintain an accurate and up-to-date attendance register.
- Carry out appropriate pre-exercise health screening with new participants.
- Be aware of participants’ relevant physical or health needs, including orthopaedic, neurological, respiratory, or mobility-related needs.
- Provide clear safety and housekeeping information, including the location of toilets, first aid equipment, emergency exits, and the fire assembly point.
- Ensure the room and any equipment are safely prepared before the session.
- Create a positive, inclusive, and encouraging environment where both men and women feel comfortable.
- Offer simple suggestions that encourage participants to remain active between sessions, such as short walks, gentle home exercises, or using the stairs where appropriate.
About You
- Friendly, patient, supportive, and confident leading small groups.
- Knowledgeable about functional fitness, strength, balance, mobility, and endurance.
- Able to adapt activities for people with different levels of fitness and mobility.
- Comfortable supporting both chair-based and standing participants.
- Good communication and organisational skills.
- Able to create a welcoming community atmosphere.
- Experience delivering exercise or movement sessions for older adults is desirable.
- Experience in community health, rehabilitation, falls prevention, active ageing, or inclusive fitness would be beneficial but is not essential.
