Weekend Cook
Location: Care Home (Wales)
Hours: Weekends (e.g. Saturday & Sunday, typically 6–10 hours per shift)
Reporting to: Care Home Manager / Head Chef
Job Purpose
To prepare, cook, and serve nutritious, well-balanced meals that meet the dietary, cultural, and personal needs of residents, ensuring high standards of food hygiene, safety, and quality at all times.
Key Responsibilities
Food Preparation & Service
- Plan and prepare meals in line with set menus and residents’ preferences
- Cook fresh, nutritious meals including breakfast, lunch, tea, and snacks
- Cater for special dietary requirements (e.g. diabetic, vegetarian, soft/pureed diets)
- Ensure meals are attractively presented and served at the correct temperature
Resident Wellbeing
- Support residents’ enjoyment of meals and promote a positive dining experience
- Be aware of individual needs, allergies, and cultural/religious preferences
- Work closely with care staff to ensure residents receive appropriate nutrition
Food Safety & Hygiene
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness in the kitchen
- Follow Food Hygiene Regulations (Wales) and Food Standards Agency (FSA) guidance
- Ensure safe storage, handling, and rotation of food (FIFO principles)
- Complete and maintain food safety records (e.g. temperature checks, cleaning schedules)
Stock & Kitchen Management
- Monitor food stock levels and report shortages
- Ensure correct storage of deliveries and check quality of supplies
- Minimise waste and support cost-effective use of ingredients
Health & Safety
- Comply with all health and safety policies and procedures
- Report hazards, accidents, or equipment faults promptly
- Use kitchen equipment safely and appropriately
Person Specification
Essential
- Experience in a cooking role (ideally in a care, healthcare, or catering setting)
- Knowledge of basic nutrition and special dietary needs
- Understanding of food hygiene and safety standards
- Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate (or willingness to obtain)
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
Desirable
- Experience working in a care home or with older adults
