Christopher Young Opticians is an independent, family-run optical practice based in the heart of Shepton Mallet, Somerset. The Role
We are looking for a qualified and enthusiastic Dispensing Optician or an experienced Dispensing Assistant to join our close-knit team on a full-time, permanent basis. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is passionate about patient care and wants to work in a practice where quality and personal service come first.
You will be responsible for dispensing spectacles and contact lenses, advising patients on frame and lens choices, taking accurate measurements, and ensuring every patient leaves with eyewear that suits their needs and lifestyle. You will also play a key role in the day-to-day running of the practice.
Working hours: Monday to Friday, plus one Saturday morning every four weeks.
What You Will Be Doing
- Dispensing spectacles and contact lenses to patients of all ages
- Advising patients on frame styles, lens types, and coatings
- Taking accurate dispensing measurements including PD, heights, and vertex distance
- Fitting, adjusting, and repairing spectacles
- Supporting patients with complex prescriptions including varifocals and specialist lenses
- Maintaining accurate patient records using our practice management system
- Contributing to a welcoming and professional practice environment
What We Are Looking For
Essential:
- Confident and accurate dispenser with experience of varifocal and complex lenses
- Excellent communication and patient care skills
- Friendly, professional, and team-oriented approach
Desirable:
- GOC-registered Dispensing Optician (FBDO or equivalent)
- Experience in an independent optical practice
- Familiarity with Optix or similar practice management software
- Interest in frame styling and optical fashion

- Salary of £25,000 – £32,000 per year (depending on experience)
