Job Purpose
Responsible for the safe, efficient and compliant operation of the outside yard, including shovel and machine driving, supervision of outside machine operators, yard organisation, and traffic management of incoming and outgoing loads.
Machine Operation & Supervision
- Operate the shovel as part of daily yard duties
- Supervise and coordinate other outside machine drivers (shovels, loaders, etc.), allocating tasks and ensuring cover throughout the shift
- Ensure all outside machine drivers complete their daily vehicle/plant checks before use, and that defects are reported and recorded correctly
- Carry out own daily checks on machinery operated
- Monitor driver competence and conduct on the yard, feeding back performance issues to the GM
Yard Organisation & Housekeeping
- Keep the outside yard tidy, organised and free of hazards
- Ensure all loads/materials are placed in the correct bay in line with site layout and segregation requirements
- Monitor stock levels/bay capacity and flag when bays are approaching capacity or need clearing
- Ensure recovered materials are seoerated and stored correctly to avoid contamination and loss of value.
- Report any housekeeping or maintenance issues (surfacing, drainage, lighting, signage) to the GM
Security & Site Checks
- Complete daily checks of the yard and perimeter security (fencing, gates, cameras, lighting)
- Report breaches, damage or security concerns immediately
- Ensure the yard is secured at the end of each shift/day as per site procedure
Traffic & Load Management
- Manage and marshal all incoming and outgoing vehicle traffic on the yard
- Ensure loads are loaded/unloaded safely, correctly and in a timely manner to avoid vehicle queuing or delays
- Check incoming loads for compliance (correct material, no visible contamination/hazardous items) and outgoing loads for correct loading/sheeting/weight before departure
- Liaise with transport/drivers to keep the yard running to schedule
- Ensure segregation of pedestrians and vehicles/plant at all times, enforcing safe pedestrian routes and banksman procedures where required
Health & Safety / Compliance
- Ensure all yard activity is carried out in line with site H&S policies, permit conditions and duty of care requirements
- Report accidents, near misses, spillages or environmental incidents immediately
- Ensure PPE compliance for all outside personnel and visitors/drivers entering the yard
- Support toolbox talks / briefings for the outside team as required
- Ensure environmental controls are maintained (dust, noise, drainage, litter/windblown waste)
Team & Reporting
- Act as first point of contact for outside yard issues during shift
- Provide daily handover/report to the GM (Josh) covering yard status, machine/driver issues, incidents and bay/stock levels
- Escalate any staffing, machinery or compliance issues promptly
Other Duties
- Fuel/DEF checks and refuelling coordination for yard plant
- Basic fault-finding/reporting on plant to keep machines available (liaising with maintenance/fitters)
- Weighbridge liaison – confirming loads match paperwork before dispatch
- Cover/deputise for the GM on yard matters in their absence
- Training/mentoring new outside machine drivers
- Ensuring visiting drivers/hauliers are inducted and follow site rules
- Winter readiness (gritting, snow clearance routes, machine cold-start checks)
- Waste transfer note / paperwork accuracy for loads leaving site
- Any other reasonable duties as directed by the General Manager
