Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a Senior Clinical Fellow Portfolio Pathway in Anaesthesia, with start date in August 2026 . The tenure of all post is 36 months, employed by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (STH) undertaking rotational placements at Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust (18 months at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and 18 months at Mid Yorkshire Teaching Hospitals). The posts do not attract a National Training Number.
The posts are based within the existing teams with access to departmental teaching and other developmental opportunities. Despite not being recognised as ‘training posts’ they allow doctors to improve the breadth and depth of their experience in Anaesthetics.
Full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise is required, and if the appointee does not hold right of residence in the UK sponsorship will be required.
The STH anaesthetic department provides anaesthesia services for both the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and the Northern General Hospital.
Being a tertiary and quaternary referral centre, the clinical caseload is stimulating, and resident doctors experience a variety of interesting and challenging cases, having opportunities to learn advanced skills and techniques.
We provide anaesthesia for Cardiothoracic surgery, Neurosurgery, Obstetrics, Complex Urology and Gynaecology, ENT and Max-Fax, Breast surgery, Plastic and reconstructive, and Burns surgery, complex Colorectal, Upper GI, and HPB surgery, Orthopaedics and Trauma, Spinal Injuries, Renal including transplant services, Vascular and interventional radiology.
We are also a Major Trauma Centre and as such, our residents experience being part of an active Major Trauma response team.
Additionally, we provide anaesthesia at non-theatre locations, including for Fluoroscopy procedures, Endoscopy, MRI, and ECT, and offer experience in deep sedation

The post holder will work closely with colleague to provide safe and holistic patient care. There will be the opportunity to do Paediatric Anaesthesia and Adult intensive care at hospitals not within our trust but whom we have a reciprocal arrangement with, Sheffield Children’s Hospital and a busy local district general hospitals.
The post attracts a starting Basic salary on Nodal Point 4 ( pro-rata) with the potential to progress to Nodal point 5 (pro rata) on completion of the relevant competencies set out in the Portfolio Pathway to support working at Stage 3 in Anaesthetics.
The Fellow will:
Deliver anaesthetic services at registrar level with progression toward independent practice
Participate in a full-shift rota (48 hours/week) compliant with the 2016 Resident Doctor Contract
Contribute to on-call rotas, including out-of-hours commitments
Receive supervision from a named Consultant Anaesthetist for each rotation
Participate in weekly protected training time
Maintain a structured educational portfolio mapped to RCoA capabilities
On-call and Service Commitments
Participation in a prospective on-call rota
On-call duties aligned with level of competence and progression
No redistribution of on-call duties outside agreed rota requirements
Fellows will not be required to cover staffing gaps beyond agreed contractual duties
