Exciting Opportunity on a Progressive 1,900-Cow Dairy Farm
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Herdsperson (2IC) to join our professional team on a large-scale, progressive dairy enterprise near the beautiful town of Gatehouse of Fleet in Southwest Scotland.
This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious individual looking to take the next step in their dairy farming career. Working closely with the Herd Manager, you will play a key role in the day-to-day management of an 1,900-cow dairy herd, helping to drive herd performance, animal welfare, and operational excellence.
The Farm
- 1,900-cow all-year-round calving herd
- Average herd yield of approximately 11,000 litres
- Three-times-a-day milking through a 70-point DeLaval rotary with robotic technology
- Modern, well-invested and efficient facilities
- Excellent standards of cow welfare, herd health and milk quality
- 3,300 acres – all field operations carried out in-house
- All dairy replacements bred within the business using world-leading genetics
- Milk supplied on a Muller direct contract
As Senior Herdsperson (2IC), you will:
- Support the Herd Manager in achieving the farm's physical and financial targets.
- Take responsibility for the welfare and daily management of the dairy herd.
- Deputise for the Herd Manager when required.
- Monitor herd health, fertility, production, and welfare standards.
- Oversee dairy records and ensure accurate data management.
- Assist in implementing feeding and breeding strategies.
- Monitor lameness and coordinate foot trimming programmes.
- Maintain high standards of milking routine and parlour performance.
- Support youngstock management and rearing programmes.
- Lead and supervise staff when required.
- Ensure full compliance with Health & Safety, Red Tractor, Dairy Farm Assurance, and all relevant legislation.
- Maintain high standards of farm presentation, organisation, and housekeeping.
We Are Looking For Someone Who Has:
- Strong dairy farming experience and excellent stockmanship skills.
- A passion for animal welfare and herd performance.
- Experience with dairy herd recording and management systems.
- The ability to lead and motivate others.
- Good organisational and communication skills.
- A proactive and positive attitude.
- The capability to work independently and as part of a team.
Previous experience in a senior herdsperson or supervisory role would be advantageous, although ambitious herdspersons looking to progress are encouraged to apply.
