Job Overview
West Lancashire Borough Council is seeking 8 Waste Management Driver / Team Leaders to support Environmental Services.
The role will involve assisting the Waste Management Officer with the management and supervision of service teams, issuing instructions, ensuring work is completed to the required specification and supporting the collection of domestic, industrial, commercial refuse, dry recyclable and compostable material across the borough.
Candidates must hold a valid C1 licence. Candidates with only a standard driving licence must not be submitted.
Candidates must also have no more than 3 points on their driving licence, as the Council cannot start workers with 3 or more points.

The role involves waste collection, team supervision, vehicle/equipment checks, use of in-cab technology, completing service documentation and working to health and safety standards.
Candidates must be able to attend an induction session, usually from 9:00am at Stanley Industrial Estate, Skelmersdale, WN8 8EE.
Candidates without a C1 licence, suitable driving record, waste management, driving, team leader or supervisory experience are unlikely to be considered.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the Waste Management Officer in managing and supervising service teams
- Issue instructions for work to be carried out
- Ensure work is completed to the required specification
- Ensure work is completed within the contracted time
- Support collection of domestic refuse
- Support collection of industrial and commercial refuse
- Support collection of dry recyclable material
- Support collection of compostable material
- Work across domestic residences, shops, flats, schools, factories and other properties
- Ensure vehicles, plant and equipment are used appropriately
- Ensure vehicles and equipment are used only for their intended purpose
- Report vehicle, plant and equipment defects through agreed channels
- Complete monitoring and round status information
- Maintain a high standard of service conduct
- Maintain safety, hygiene and security of the work site
- Follow established health and safety procedures
- Follow codes of practice and manufacturer operating instructions
- Attend meetings as required
- Complete service documentation accurately and on time
- Use in-cab technology as directed
- Attend and complete induction before starting work
- Support overtime, Saturday or Monday working where required
Essential Experience & Skills
- Valid C1 driving licence
- No more than 3 points on driving licence
- Waste management, refuse, recycling or cleansing experience
- Experience driving operational vehicles
- Experience supervising or leading a small operational team
- Ability to issue clear work instructions
- Ability to ensure work is completed to specification and deadline
- Understanding of waste collection operations
- Ability to use vehicles, plant and equipment safely
- Ability to identify and report defects
- Good health and safety awareness
- Ability to follow procedures, codes of practice and operating instructions
- Ability to complete monitoring and service documentation
- Ability to use in-cab technology
- Ability to work early starts and operational shifts
- Reliable and punctual approach
- Ability to work outdoors and in a physically active environment
- Eligibility to work in the UK
Desirable
- Previous local authority waste management experience
- Previous refuse or recycling collection experience
- Experience supervising waste collection crews
- Experience using in-cab technology
- Experience completing round status information
- Experience working across domestic, commercial and industrial waste collections
- Knowledge of West Lancashire / Skelmersdale area
- Availability for overtime, Saturday or Monday working
Additional Information
Candidates must hold a valid C1 licence.
Candidates with 3 or more points on their driving licence, the Council is unable to employ them.
Candidates will be required to complete an induction session, usually from 9:00am at Stanley Industrial Estate, Skelmersdale, WN8 8EE. This will be confirmed once the worker is active on the system.
