Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled and reliable Handyman/woman to ensure the GP surgery premises, equipment, and grounds are maintained to a safe, clean, and operational standard, supporting the delivery of high-quality patient care and compliance with healthcare regulations. The job is contracted to a minimum of 7 hours per week but there may be extra hours for specific projects.
- Carry out routine maintenance and minor repairs to the surgery building, fixtures, fittings, and equipment.
- Conduct regular inspections of the premises to identify maintenance issues, hazards, or defects and take appropriate action.
- Undertake basic plumbing repairs, including fixing leaks, replacing taps, and maintaining sanitary facilities.
- Perform minor decorating, painting, and refurbishment work to maintain a professional healthcare environment.
- Replace light bulbs, fittings, and carry out simple electrical maintenance within competency and safety guidelines.
- Ensure waiting areas, consultation rooms, offices, and communal spaces are maintained in good condition.
- Monitor and maintain external areas, including car parks, walkways, fencing, and grounds to ensure patient and staff safety.
- Liaise with external contractors and service providers, sometimes providing access and oversight when maintenance works are undertaken.
- Support statutory compliance checks, including fire safety equipment inspections, emergency lighting checks, and water temperature monitoring.
- Assist with furniture assembly, room reconfiguration, and movement of equipment as required.
- Respond promptly to maintenance requests from staff and prioritise urgent repairs that may impact patient services.
- Ensure all maintenance activities comply with Health and Safety legislation, Infection Prevention and Control standards, and surgery policies.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, repairs, and contractor visits.
- Support business continuity by assisting with emergency repairs and helping to ensure the surgery remains safe, secure, and operational at all times.
Person SpecificationEssential
- Experience in building maintenance, facilities, or handyman services.
- Knowledge of basic plumbing, carpentry, decorating, and general repairs.
- Understanding of health and safety requirements.
- Ability to work independently and prioritise workload.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Desirable
- Experience working in a healthcare, NHS, or primary care environment.
- Knowledge of infection prevention and control requirements.
- Basic understanding of compliance requirements relating to healthcare premises.
Pay: From £15.00 per hour
