Job Overview
We are seeking a reliable and proactive Maintenance Assistant to join our team at The Royal Hotel Whitby. Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, you will play a key role in ensuring the hotel, guest rooms, public areas, and back-of-house facilities are maintained to a high standard.
The successful candidate will be practical, hands-on, and capable of carrying out a wide range of maintenance tasks, ensuring our guests enjoy a safe, comfortable, and welcoming environment. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with experience in hotel, hospitality, property, or general building maintenance who takes pride in their work and enjoys working as part of a team.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance throughout the hotel.
- Respond promptly to maintenance requests from departments, ensuring minimal disruption to guests.
- Perform general repairs including painting, decorating, carpentry, plumbing, plastering, tiling and basic joinery.
- Undertake basic electrical maintenance, replacing light fittings, switches, sockets and carrying out minor fault finding (within competency).
- Complete minor plumbing repairs including taps, toilets, showers and pipework.
- Assist with repairs and maintenance of hotel bedrooms, bathrooms, public areas and external grounds.
- Carry out routine inspections of hotel facilities and identify potential maintenance issues before they become major problems.
- Support contractors on site and monitor work to ensure it is completed safely and to the required standard.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records and complete work orders using the hotel's maintenance system.
- Ensure compliance with Health & Safety legislation, fire safety regulations and company procedures.
- Assist with moving furniture, setting up function rooms and supporting operational departments when required.
- Participate in emergency call-outs and out-of-hours maintenance when necessary.
- Help maintain a clean, safe and organised workshop and storage areas.
- Deliver excellent customer service by interacting professionally and courteously with guests and colleagues.
Skills & Experience
The ideal candidate will have:
- Previous experience in hotel, hospitality, facilities, property or building maintenance.
- Good all-round maintenance skills including basic plumbing, carpentry, decorating and general repairs.
- Basic electrical knowledge (18th Edition qualification desirable but not essential).
- Good understanding of Health & Safety practices.
- Ability to diagnose faults and carry out repairs efficiently.
- Experience using hand and power tools safely.
- Ability to prioritise workload and manage multiple maintenance requests.
- Good communication skills and a positive, can-do attitude.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Full UK driving licence (desirable but not essential).
- Flexibility to work weekends, bank holidays and occasional evenings as required.
