We are looking for a hard-working, reliable individual who can work effectively within a team who can fill a full-time (5 days per week) position. Previous experience desirable.
Purpose:
As a Driver/Bearer you will ensure the smooth running of the funeral service, following the instructions of the appointed Funeral Director. You will uphold the company’s reputation by acting in a professional manner to all those connected to the funeral including customers and officiants.
Working Hours:
Monday to Friday, 8.15 am – 4.45 pm, with 30-minute unpaid break.
PLUS participation in the out-of-hours on-call rota (evenings and weekends, currently 1 in every 5 weeks).
Salary from 1st April 2026:
£13.17 per hour for candidates new to the role
£13.67 per hour for candidates with previous experience
On-call rota rates: £200 weekly standby payment, plus £26.50 per call out.
Role Responsibilities:
- You will transfer deceased from the hospital, nursing home or place of death to the company premises.
- You will transfer deceased between company premises for chapel visitations.
- You will take deceased home or in to church prior to the funeral service when required.
- You will drive funeral vehicles, private ambulances and other company vehicles.
- You will keep all company vehicles clean and polished, inside and out.
- You will assist as a pall bearer.
- You will transport service sheets, donation boxes and any other required items to and from funeral services, and will set them up in accordance with the instructions of the Funeral Director.
- You will ensure the necessary items are available and taken to each funeral service, such as trestles or lowering straps.
- You will record mourner’s names when requested.
- You will transport officiants, Funeral Directors and other staff to and from funeral services.
- You will record floral tributes received for the funeral and will ensure they are displayed in the correct hearse.
- You will deliver floral tributes to the desired location after the funeral service.
- You will refuel vehicles and will conduct maintenance checks on company vehicles.
- You will transfer coffins and sundry items from the manufactures to the company premises.
- You will deliver paperwork to the relevant crematorium and cemetery offices.
- You will assist the embalmers with mortuary duties such as frilling coffins and transferring deceased in to their coffins.
- You will collect cremated remains from the crematorium.
- You will participate in the out-of-hours on-call rota which involves being available during the evenings and night to facilitate the transfer of deceased.
