VSL UK is delivering the engineering and construction of the Eternal Wall of Answered Prayer, a landmark national monument in Coleshill, Birmingham. Standing 51.5 metres high and formed as a striking Möbius strip, the structure will feature one million bricks, each representing a story of answered prayer, creating a lasting symbol of hope visible from up to six miles away.
As Main Contractor and Principal Designer, VSL UK is responsible for the design, engineering, and construction of this iconic structure, drawing on its expertise in complex structural engineering, heavy lifting, and technically challenging construction projects. Role Overview
VSL is seeking a Quality & Environmental Engineer to join the project delivery team responsible for the successful delivery of the Eternal Wall of Answered Prayer.
The role will support the implementation, monitoring, and continual improvement of the project's Quality and Environmental Management Systems, ensuring construction activities are delivered in accordance with company procedures, client requirements, and recognised industry standards.
Working closely with operational teams, subcontractors, and project stakeholders, the position will play a key role in promoting compliance, supporting audits and inspections, managing quality and environmental risks, and driving a culture of continuous improvement across the project. Main Responsibilities
Quality Management Support the implementation and continual improvement of the Project Quality Management Plan. Prepare, maintain, and monitor Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs), Quality Plans, Quality Objectives, and associated project documentation. Carry out quality inspections and site audits to verify compliance with project requirements, specifications, and company procedures. Manage non-conformances, corrective actions, and lessons learned processes, ensuring effective close-out and continuous improvement. Support the identification, assessment, and mitigation of quality-related risks throughout the construction lifecycle. Monitor quality performance indicators and contribute to project quality reporting and management review processes.
Environmental Management Support the implementation and maintenance of the Project Environmental Management Plan. Monitor compliance with environmental legislation, company procedures, and client requirements. Identify environmental aspects, impacts, and mitigation measures associated with construction activities. Undertake environmental inspections, audits, and reporting activities to verify compliance and drive improvement. Support carbon emissions monitoring and environmental performance reporting requirements. Promote environmental awareness and best practice across project teams and supply chain partners.
Compliance, Auditing & Assurance Undertake regular site inspections, surveillance activities, and compliance reviews. Support internal and external audits and assist with the implementation of corrective and preventive actions. Maintain accurate inspection records, audit findings, reports, and project documentation. Monitor the closure of actions arising from inspections, audits, and non-conformance processes. Ensure all quality and environmental records are maintained in accordance with project and company requirements.
Digital Delivery & Documentation Utilise digital construction platforms such as FieldView, Dalux, BIM 360, or equivalent systems to manage inspections, reporting, and compliance activities. Support the effective management, control, and retention of project quality and environmental records. Ensure documentation is maintained accurately, consistently, and in accordance with project procedures. Contribute to the continual improvement of digital quality and environmental management processes.
Stakeholder Management Build effective working relationships with project teams, subcontractors, clients, and external stakeholders. Communicate quality and environmental requirements clearly across all levels of the project. Support project teams in understanding compliance obligations, inspection requirements, and best practice standards. Promote a collaborative culture focused on quality, environmental performance, and operational excellence. Candidate Profile
Education & Experience Degree, HNC, or HND in Civil Engineering, Environmental Management, Quality Management, or a related discipline. Approximately 3–5 years' experience within civil engineering, infrastructure, geotechnical, or construction projects. Practical experience implementing quality and/or environmental management systems on live construction sites. Experience carrying out inspections, audits, and compliance monitoring activities. Experience working on major infrastructure or heavy civil engineering projects would be advantageous.
Technical Skills Working knowledge of ISO 9001:2015 and/or ISO 14001:2015. Experience preparing and implementing Quality Plans, Environmental Management Plans, and Inspection & Test Plans. Understanding of risk management, non-conformance processes, corrective actions, and continuous improvement methodologies. Knowledge of environmental compliance, environmental impact management, and carbon reporting within construction projects. Experience using digital construction platforms such as FieldView, Dalux, BIM 360, or similar systems. Strong reporting, documentation, and communication skills.
