Mobile Crane Engineer - The Opportunity
Are you an experienced Crane Engineer, Service Engineer or Heavy Engineering Technician looking for a role where your technical expertise really matters?
We’re looking for a skilled Field Service Engineer to join a specialist engineering team supporting Ship-to-Shore (STS), Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) and Rail Mounted Gantry (RMG) cranes at customer sites across the UK.
This is a hands-on field role suited to an engineer who enjoys diagnosing complex faults, solving problems under pressure and working on large-scale industrial equipment. You’ll have the opportunity to work on some of the most technically demanding machinery in the material handling and port industries, with excellent opportunities to develop your electrical, PLC, hydraulic and mechanical expertise.
If you’re an engineer who takes pride in getting to the root cause of a fault rather than simply replacing components, this could be the opportunity for you.
Mobile Crane Engineer - What You'll Be Doing
- Carry out servicing, inspections, maintenance and repairs on STS, RTG and RMG cranes at customer sites, depots and workshops.
- Diagnose and repair electrical, PLC, hydraulic and mechanical faults.
- Carry out fault-finding and root-cause diagnosis on complex crane systems.
- Service and repair diesel engines where required.
- Assist with the erection, dismantling, repair and commissioning of large gantry crane equipment.
- Work safely at height and in challenging industrial environments.
- Read and interpret technical information, service documentation, electrical schematics and manufacturer guidelines.
- Work closely with technical specialists to resolve complex faults and develop your technical knowledge.
- Manage your own workload and prioritise jobs to meet customer and operational deadlines.
- Complete service reports, paperwork and warranty processes accurately and on time.
- Maintain tools, equipment and company vehicles to a high standard.
- Communicate directly with customers to understand their requirements and provide a professional service.
- Ensure work areas are left clean, safe and to a standard that reflects positively on the engineering team.
- Identify opportunities to improve processes, efficiency and reliability.
- Support colleagues and contribute to a strong team-working environment.
- Maintain a consistently high standard of health and safety.
- Participate in additional hours and an out-of-hours support rota where required.
Mobile Crane Engineer - What We're Looking For
We’re particularly interested in engineers with experience working on mobile cranes, port equipment, heavy plant, lifting equipment, industrial machinery or similar complex electro-mechanical systems.
You should have:
- Recognised engineering apprenticeship or equivalent qualification, ideally to NVQ Level 3 or above.
- Strong electrical fault-finding experience.
- Practical PLC knowledge and the ability to diagnose control-system faults.
- Hydraulic fault-finding and repair experience.
- Mechanical engineering experience.
- Diesel engine experience is desirable.
- Experience working at height and in industrial environments.
- GCSEs or equivalent in Maths and English.
- A full clean UK driving licence.
- A methodical approach to fault diagnosis and problem solving.
- The confidence to work independently while knowing when to seek technical support.
- Strong communication and customer-facing skills.
- A genuine interest in developing your technical expertise.
Mobile Crane Engineer - Why Join?
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer to build a long-term career working on large-scale, technically advanced crane systems.
You'll benefit from:
- Competitive salary, based on experience and technical capability.
- Secure, long-term employment within a specialist engineering environment.
- Structured technical training and ongoing development.
- Opportunities to broaden your expertise across electrical, PLC, hydraulic, mechanical and crane systems.
- Exposure to major industrial and port environments.
- A role where experienced engineers are trusted to use their knowledge and judgement.
- Career progression opportunities.
- A supportive technical and engineering team.
- The opportunity to work on some of the largest and most complex lifting equipment in the industry.
Mobile Crane Engineer - The Engineer We're Looking For
You don't have to come from exactly the same crane background. If you’re an experienced crane, heavy plant, agricultural, mobile plant, industrial, electrical or electro-mechanical engineer with strong diagnostic skills, we want to hear from you.
What matters most is your ability to understand complex machinery, diagnose faults accurately, work safely and deliver a quality repair for the customer.
