About the role
Eleven Bibury is looking for a Gallery Shop Assistant to work alongside our Gallery Manager and act as her deputy.
This is not a till job. Our gallery shop sells original work by the artists we represent alongside a carefully chosen range of retail brands. You will be selling it, presenting it and talking about it. When the Gallery Manager is away or working elsewhere on site, the gallery is yours to run.
We want someone commercially minded who takes ownership without being asked. If you enjoy retail, have a real interest in art and design, and want to help build something rather than just staff it, this is a good place to do it.
What you will be doing
Customers and sales
- Engage with every visitor who comes through the door and give knowledgeable, warm service.
- Talk confidently about our artists, their work and how it is made.
- Spot sales opportunities and make recommendations that suit the customer.
- Work towards individual and gallery sales targets.
- Operate the Shopify till accurately.
The shop floor and stock
- Keep the shop beautifully presented, full and tidy throughout the day.
- Monitor stock levels and restock the floor before it looks empty.
- Receive deliveries, check them against orders and raise any discrepancies.
- Price new stock, add barcodes and prepare items for sale.
- Keep Shopify product information accurate and up to date.
- Maintain stock records, run stock counts and keep storage areas organised.
- Flag slow-moving, damaged or missing stock to the Gallery Manager.
Online shop
- Help run the online shop day to day.
- Process, pick, pack and dispatch online orders to a high standard.
- Package artwork and products safely and appropriately.
- Keep online pricing, listings and stock availability correct.
- Add new products and update existing listings.
Deputising for the Gallery Manager
- Take charge of the gallery shop when the Gallery Manager is away.
- Take ownership of routine tasks and use your initiative.
- Keep the Gallery Manager informed on stock, deliveries, orders and anything that needs her attention.
- Look for ways to improve the customer experience, the presentation of the shop and sales.
Events
- Help prepare, run and clear up after exhibition previews, private views and late night shopping.
- Represent the gallery professionally to customers, artists and visitors.
What we are looking for
We need someone who understands that the job is to make the shop successful, not simply to operate the till.
The person we are looking for sees an empty shelf and restocks it without being asked. They notice an online order waiting and get it packed. They spot a customer browsing and start a conversation. They remember the story behind an artist's work and can explain why it is special. They see stock running low and tell the Gallery Manager before it becomes a problem.
In practice, that means you can be a salesperson, an art and craft enthusiast, a shopkeeper, a stock controller, a Shopify administrator, a customer service representative and a trusted right hand to the Gallery Manager.
You will also need:
- Retail or gallery experience, ideally somewhere small where you had to turn your hand to everything.
- A genuine interest in art, craftsmanship and design.
- Confidence selling, and comfort talking to customers you have never met.
- Reliability and independence, so you can be trusted with the keys.
- An eye for detail on stock, pricing and presentation.
- Comfort with Shopify, or the ability to pick it up quickly.
- Availability to work weekends and bank holidays.
Experience of gallery or luxury retail is welcome but not essential. Attitude and commercial instinct matter more.
What we offer
- £13.00 to £15.00 per hour, depending on experience.
- 28 days holiday including bank holidays.
- Workplace pension.
- Staff discount.
- A genuine route to grow with the business as the gallery expands.
