Poultry Handler/Catcher
A Chicken Catcher's job description includes travelling to poultry farms to catch birds, load them into crates or modules for transport, and maintain high standards of hygiene, biosecurity, and bird welfare while adhering to health and safety procedures. Responsibilities also involve preparing modules for birds, assisting with site security, keeping records, and working efficiently as part of a team under a foreperson.
Key Responsibilities
Catching and Handling:
Physically catch poultry and load them into modules or crates according to welfare standards, ensuring minimal stress and avoiding injury.
Bird Welfare:
Implement welfare codes and protocols, and monitor for any signs of distress or injury, culling sick or injured birds humanely.
Hygiene & Biosecurity:
Maintain high standards of hygiene and follow biosecurity protocols to prevent disease spread.
Loading & Transport:
Prepare module drawers, load birds into them correctly, and assist with loading/unloading for shipment.
Teamwork:
Work as part of a team to meet production targets and follow instructions from a foreperson or supervisor.
Safety & Procedures:
Follow company health and safety, environmental procedures, and site-specific rules.
Working Conditions
Physical Work: This is a physically demanding role involving handling livestock in potentially dark, smelly environments.
Team Environment: You will be working with a team and travelling in a van to different farms on a daily basis.
Irregular Hours: This role can involve irregular hours, including day and night shifts.
Required Skills
Ability to handle poultry without difficulty.
Understanding of welfare codes and bird behaviour.
Ability to follow instructions and work in a team.
Awareness of health, safety, and biosecurity measures.
Physical fitness and ability to work in challenging conditions.
Successful candidates would ideally have previous experience in catching poultry, however full training will be provided to all successful candidates.
Working as part of a small team, candidates need to be punctual, reliable and hardworking and show a commitment to developing a career within the industry.
Hours of working can include day, night and weekend working.
