Volunteer Gardener – Help Keep Our Scout Grounds Thriving
Help create an outdoor space where young people can learn, play and grow.
9th Southampton City Scout Group is looking for a Volunteer Gardener to help care for and improve the outdoor areas around our Scout headquarters in Shirley Warren, Southampton.
Our grounds are used every week by more than 50 young people taking part in Scouting activities, outdoor games, campfires and community events. With your help, we can keep our outdoor space safe, welcoming and enjoyable for everyone.
Whether you're an experienced gardener, enjoy spending time outdoors or simply want to put your practical skills to good use, we'd love to hear from you.
What will you be doing?
As our Volunteer Gardener, you can help with tasks such as:
- Mowing lawns and keeping grassy areas tidy.
- Weeding and maintaining flower beds and borders.
- Pruning shrubs, hedges and small trees.
- Planting flowers, shrubs or wildlife-friendly plants.
- Sweeping paths and keeping outdoor areas clean.
- Helping maintain our campfire and activity areas.
- Suggesting ideas to improve our outdoor spaces.
- Supporting occasional group gardening or community improvement days.
You can volunteer as little or as often as you're able, and we'll work around your availability.
What are we looking for?
We're looking for someone who:
- Enjoys gardening or working outdoors.
- Is reliable and happy working independently or as part of a team.
- Takes pride in creating attractive, safe outdoor spaces.
- Can spot small maintenance issues and let us know if something needs attention.
- Shares our commitment to providing great experiences for local young people.
No formal gardening qualifications are needed—enthusiasm and a willingness to help are what matter most.
What difference will you make?
Your support will help create an outdoor environment where young people can safely explore, learn and enjoy nature.
By volunteering you'll help us:
- Keep our grounds safe and welcoming.
- Improve biodiversity and create a more attractive outdoor space.
- Reduce maintenance costs, allowing more funds to be spent on activities for young people.
- Create a welcoming environment for families, volunteers and community groups using our headquarters.
- Support outdoor learning, games and adventurous activities throughout the year.
Every hour you volunteer helps us provide better experiences for local children and young people.
What will you gain?
- Spend time outdoors doing something rewarding.
- Meet friendly local volunteers.
- Make a visible difference in your community.
- Use or develop gardening and practical skills.
- Volunteer flexibly around your own schedule.
- Be part of one of the UK's largest youth organisations, helping young people gain Skills for Life.
Time Commitment
Flexible. Whether you can spare a couple of hours once a month or a few hours each week, we'll work with you to find a commitment that suits your availability.
