Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled and dedicated HGV Technician to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining, repairing, and servicing heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) to ensure optimal safety and performance, MOT preparation and presentation to DVSA standard, on-site servicing, repairs and attending breakdowns. This position requires a commitment to high standards of workmanship and customer service.
Responsibilities
- Conduct routine inspections and preventative maintenance on HGVs, including engines, brakes, transmissions, and electrical systems.
- MOT preparation and presentation to DVSA standard.
- Diagnose faults accurately using schematics and diagnostic tools; perform repairs efficiently.
- Fabricate, weld, solder, or modify components as needed to meet repair specifications.
- Utilise hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and other specialised machinery to carry out repairs and assembly tasks.
- Repair or replace faulty parts using mechanical knowledge and equipment repair techniques.
- Maintain detailed records of all maintenance activities and repairs performed.
- Assist with the repair of auxiliary equipment such as excavators and forklifts when required.
- Ensure all work complies with health and safety regulations; identify potential hazards during inspections.
- Provide excellent customer service by communicating repair status clearly to clients or supervisors.
- Perform heavy lifting tasks safely while handling large or cumbersome components.
Skills
- Proven experience in electrical systems, mechanical repairs, fabrication, welding, soldering, and schematics interpretation.
- HGV Class 1 Licence.
- Strong knowledge of heavy vehicle systems including engines, brakes, transmissions, and hydraulics.
- Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and diagnostic machinery.
- Ability to read technical diagrams and schematics accurately.
- Experience working with specialised machinery such as excavators or forklifts is desirable.
- Excellent problem-solving skills with a keen eye for detail during inspections and repairs.
- Good organisational skills to manage multiple tasks efficiently while maintaining safety standards.
- Customer service skills to communicate effectively with clients or team members regarding repairs or maintenance issues.
- Physical capability for heavy lifting and working in demanding environments; able to work in various weather conditions if required.

Experience
- Proven experience as an HGV Technician or in a similar heavy vehicle maintenance role.
- Strong mechanical knowledge with hands-on experience in equipment repair, assembly, welding, fabrication, soldering, and electrical systems.
- Familiarity with schematics and technical manuals for vehicle diagnostics.
- Experience working with power tools, hand tools, and specialised equipment such as forklifts or excavators is desirable.
- Ability to perform heavy lifting safely and efficiently during repairs or parts replacement.
- Previous experience in maintaining commercial vehicles within a busy workshop environment is preferred.
- Excellent problem-solving skills coupled with a proactive approach to troubleshooting issues on heavy vehicles.
