We are seeking a proactive and skilled Plant Engineer / Steam Boiler Operator to oversee the operation, maintenance, and safety of our industrial plant’s mechanical systems, with a focus on steam boiler management. In this vital role, you will ensure the efficient functioning of plant equipment, uphold safety standards, and support continuous production processes. Your expertise will help maintain optimal operational performance while adhering to environmental and safety regulations. Duties
- Operate and monitor steam boilers and related mechanical systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation.
- Conduct routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting of boilers, pumps, valves, and other plant machinery.
- Perform heavy lifting tasks when handling equipment parts or materials during maintenance activities.
- Maintain detailed logs of boiler operations, maintenance activities, and safety checks to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
- Respond promptly to system alarms or malfunctions, diagnosing issues quickly to minimize downtime.
- Assist in implementing safety procedures and participate in safety audits to promote a secure work environment.
- Collaborate with maintenance teams to plan repairs or upgrades that enhance system performance.
Skills
- Strong mechanical knowledge with the ability to interpret technical manuals and schematics.
- BOAS accreditation (Category 2 – Shell Steam Boilers) issued by the Combustion Engineering Association, or equivalent
- A minimum of 6 months (or 100 logged hours) of verified practical experience working in a boiler house, supported by a signed portfolio of evidence covering start-up/shut-down, routine checks, water quality management and plant maintenance
- Working knowledge of BG01 (Safe Operation of Boilers) and PSSR 2000
- Experience of boiler water treatment and testing (pH, TDS, chemical dosing)
- Ability to perform heavy lifting safely and efficiently as part of routine maintenance tasks.
- Excellent problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to troubleshooting mechanical issues.
- Good communication skills for documenting procedures and coordinating with team members.
- Knowledge of safety regulations related to boiler operation and industrial machinery. - Counterbalance forklift truck licence (training can be provided for the right candidate)
- Experience in EPS, plastics, or another steam-based manufacturing process
- Mechanical or electrical engineering qualification (e.g. NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, or apprenticeship)
