The Opportunity
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Production Manager to join a leading organisation within the rail rolling stock industry, based at a brand-new overhaul facility in Manchester.
This is a unique opportunity to join the project at an early stage and play a key role in establishing and mobilising a new UK overhaul operation. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape the facility from the ground up, supporting the development of the workshop, production processes, equipment, systems and operational team.
Reporting directly to the Head of Overhaul, the Production Manager will take overall responsibility for the day-to-day production operation, with a particular focus on PWP overhaul activities. This is a hands-on leadership position for someone who thrives in a new-project environment and enjoys building high-performing teams and production operations.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage PWP overhaul production activities at the new Manchester facility.
Take a leading role in the setup and mobilisation of the new overhaul installation, helping establish efficient and robust production processes.
Manage, develop and motivate a growing team of Team Leaders and Technicians.
Plan and coordinate day-to-day production activities to ensure agreed safety, quality, cost and delivery targets are achieved.
Establish and maintain high standards of 5S, housekeeping, organisation and shop-floor discipline.
Work closely with Engineering, Materials, HSQE, Supply Chain and other support functions to ensure efficient production workflows.
Support the specification and introduction of equipment, tooling, systems and production facilities.
Help develop and implement production procedures, work instructions and processes.
Ensure the operational team receives appropriate training and has a strong understanding of applicable processes, BOMs and overhaul requirements.
Monitor production performance, identify bottlenecks and drive continuous improvement across the workshop.
Ensure compliance with all relevant HSQE requirements, risk assessments and operational procedures.
Work with contractors, suppliers and other stakeholders during the facility mobilisation and ongoing operation.
Support the development of production planning and resource requirements as the operation grows.
Benchmark best practice and support the implementation of robust overhaul standards across the facility.
About You
We are looking for an experienced Production Manager, Workshop Manager or similar production leader with a strong background in heavy engineering, rail or rolling stock.
You will ideally have:
5+ years experience in production and people management within a heavy engineering, rail or comparable industrial environment.
A proven track record of delivering production outputs safely, on time and to the required quality standards.
Strong experience of workshop operations, ideally including PWP overhaul or depot overhaul maintenance.
Experience leading, developing and motivating technical production teams.
Practical knowledge of HSQE requirements, risk assessments and shop-floor compliance.
Experience working within structured production, maintenance or overhaul environments.
Working knowledge of ERP/CMMS systems such as SAP, GMAO or equivalent, alongside production planning tools.
A relevant Engineering or technical qualification - Level 4/5 preferred, although Level 3 will be considered alongside strong relevant experience.
IOSH Managing Safely or an equivalent safety qualification.
Strong organisational, communication and problem-solving skills.
The ability to work effectively across Engineering, Operations, Materials, Supply Chain and HSQE functions.
