Job Description:
We have a fantastic opportunity for a reliable, hardworking, enthusiastic, and motivated individual to join our friendly and supportive team at our state-of-the-art RCVS accredited Equine Hospital just outside of Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire.
As a keen team player, you will be working under the supervision or our Laboratory Manager and alongside experienced veterinary and support staff teams to deliver the best care and service to our patients and clients. We cover a wide variety of patients from high-end competition horses to much loved family pet horses.
The role is varied but the key tasks will include:
- Running haematology and biochemistry samples using automated and manual methods, including wet chemistry analysers
- Process microbiology samples using various methods and applicable tests
- Process samples as part of BEVA CEM scheme, including biannual external QC exam
- Process samples using LAMP technology
- Perform faecal worm egg counts
- Process samples for cytology to include trach wash, synovial and peritoneal fluid, corneal and skin and endometrial samples.
- Process samples for external laboratory testing, including research of suitable tests
- Liaise with the veterinary and nursing team to help establish and maintain clinical audits
- Keep accurate administrative records of all samples submitted and update practice system ensuring that confidentiality is always maintained.
- Organise internal and external QC and calibration of machines and maintenance of equipment
- Assist with laboratory training of nurses and work placement students
- Ensure that correct invoicing of laboratory work is performed.
- Ensure the laboratory is always kept clean and tidy and efficient stock levels of reagents and consumables.
- Assist nurses and vets with OOH support
The essential skills for a successful candidate are:
- High standards of work and excellent attention to detail
- Able to work well as an individual and as part of a team
- Ability to prioritise work as needed without direction
- Good communication skills
- Previous Lab experience preferred but not essential
- A knowledge of horses is an advantage but not essential.
You will be required to participate in a weekend rota to cover Saturday mornings (currently 1 in 3 weekends), and a bank holiday rota during April and May. The normal hours are: Monday – Friday 8.30 am to 5.30 pm with a one-hour unpaid lunch break, Saturday mornings 8.30am – 12.30pm, April and May bank holiday cover 8.30am – 12.30pm.
We are looking for a full-time member of the team but would consider part-time hours for the right candidate.
