We are looking for a reliable, friendly and confident Retail Assistant / Cashier to join our team.
This is not a till-only position. It is a hands-on retail role involving customer service, cash handling, cleaning, stock replenishment, deliveries and general responsibility for keeping the shop running properly during your shift.
About the Role
Your responsibilities will include:
- Serving customers in a friendly and professional manner
- Operating the EPOS/till system
- Handling cash and card payments accurately
- Cashing up and reconciling your till at the end of your shift
- Recording and reporting any till discrepancies
- Using barcode scanners and card terminals
- Operating National Lottery and scratchcard equipment once trained
- Replenishing shelves, fridges and displays throughout your shift
- Moving stock between the upstairs stock room and the shop floor
- Checking stock levels and identifying products that need replenishing
- Cleaning shelves and displays
- Sweeping and mopping floors
- Keeping counters, work areas and the stock room clean and tidy
- Receiving deliveries
- Physically checking deliveries against invoices or delivery notes
- Recording and reporting any shortages, damaged goods or discrepancies
- Signing for deliveries once they have been correctly checked
- Checking dates and maintaining good stock rotation
- Following Challenge 25 and all procedures relating to age-restricted products
- Recording products customers ask us to stock
- Passing customer feedback and product requests to management
A Community Shop
The Wine Cellar is a local shop with many regular customers.
We are therefore looking for someone who genuinely enjoys speaking with people.
You should be:
- Friendly and approachable
- Confident starting conversations with customers
- Helpful and polite
- Comfortable dealing with regular customers
- Able to listen to customer requests and feedback
- Willing to help us understand what products the local community wants us to stock
Good customer service is a major part of this role.
A Hands-On Role
Our main stock room is located upstairs.
You will regularly need to safely move and carry stock between the stock room and shop floor, including using a flight of stairs.
The role also involves standing, replenishing shelves, cleaning and handling deliveries.
Applicants should therefore be comfortable undertaking the physical duties involved in retail work, with reasonable adjustments considered where appropriate.
Technology
You do not need to be an IT expert, but you should be confident learning and using technology.
You will use equipment including:
- EPOS/till system
- Barcode scanners
- Card payment terminal
- National Lottery terminal
- Scratchcard systems
- Other shop equipment and technology
Full training will be provided where required.
Cash & Stock Responsibility
All staff are expected to follow the shop's cash-handling, stock-control and delivery procedures.
This includes:
- Accurately reconciling your till
- Reporting discrepancies
- Checking deliveries against supplier paperwork
- Signing the appropriate records
- Following stock-control procedures
These procedures apply consistently to all employees.

Hours
Part-time.
Shifts may include:
- Weekdays
- Evenings
- Saturdays
- Sundays
Additional hours may be available for holiday, sickness and busy-period cover.
