Yard Operative / Steelwork PainterJob Purpose
To support the safe and efficient operation of the structural-steel yard. The role includes receiving and checking deliveries, loading and unloading vehicles, preparing and painting structural steelwork, and keeping different jobs and steelwork lots correctly identified, organised and stored.
Main Duties and ResponsibilitiesDeliveries and Stock Checking
- Receive deliveries of structural steelwork, steel sections, fittings, materials, consumables and palletised goods.
- Obtain the delivery note and physically check the goods delivered against it.
- Inspect delivered materials for visible damage, defects, shortages or incorrect items.
Loading and Unloading
- Safely load and unload structural steelwork, fabricated steel, pallets and other materials from vans, flatbed vehicles and HGV trailers.
- Use forklifts, cranes and other lifting equipment only when appropriately trained and authorised.
- Select and use suitable lifting accessories, including chains, slings and shackles.
- Check that loads are stable, correctly positioned and adequately secured before vehicles leave the yard.
- Take particular care to prevent damage to fabricated, painted or galvanised steelwork.
- Assist drivers and other employees during vehicle movements and lifting operations.
Steel Preparation and Painting
- Prepare structural steel beams and fabricated steelwork for painting, including cleaning, degreasing, removing loose rust or scale and masking areas where required.
- Apply primers and finishing coats by brush, roller or spray in accordance with the specified paint system.
- Ensure steelwork receives an even and complete coating, including edges, welds and difficult-to-reach areas.
- Keep painted steelwork separated and protected while it dries.
- Check completed work for missed areas, runs, contamination or damage and complete any necessary touch-ups.
- Maintain paint, preparation equipment and painting areas in a clean and usable condition.
Yard Organisation and Housekeeping
- Keep steelwork separated into the correct job lots and clearly identified by job number, phase or destination.
- Organise stock steel, fabricated steelwork, pallets, fittings and consumables so they can be located and handled efficiently.
- Prevent materials from becoming mixed, misplaced, damaged or stored unsafely.
- Maintain clear access routes, loading areas, fire exits and pedestrian walkways.
- Regularly sweep and clean the yard and remove banding, timber, packaging and other waste.
- Monitor stock levels and report low, missing or damaged items.
- Assist with preparing and checking steelwork for collection or delivery.
Health and Safety
- Follow all company health and safety procedures, lifting plans and site rules.
- Wear the required personal protective equipment at all times.
- Carry out basic pre-use checks on forklifts, lifting equipment and other machinery.
- Report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, accidents and near misses immediately.
- Never carry out a lifting or machinery operation without the necessary training and authorisation.
- Handle paints, thinners and other substances in accordance with COSHH requirements.
Skills and Experience
- Previous experience in a steel-fabrication yard, warehouse, industrial painting or a similar environment is preferred.
- Experience handling structural steelwork and long or irregular loads would be beneficial.
- Forklift, overhead-crane, banksman or slinging qualifications would be advantageous.
- Able to read delivery notes and identify common steel section sizes, lengths and quantities.
- Good attention to detail, particularly when checking deliveries and separating job lots.
- Able to work safely both independently and as part of a team.
- Physically capable of carrying out manual and outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
- Reliable, organised and willing to maintain a clean and orderly working environment.
Key Requirement
The successful applicant will be personally responsible for checking incoming deliveries. Delivery notes must be compared with the steelwork and materials physically received; they must not be signed solely on the basis of the supplier’s paperwork. Any shortage, incorrect item or damage must be recorded and reported before the delivery is accepted wherever reasonably practicable.
Pay: Up to £18.00 per hour
