Company Overview
Birch Base Ltd is a furniture and joinery workshop based in Ditchling, East Sussex. We make bespoke furniture and joinery, with a focus on good materials, accurate workmanship and properly finished work.
We're looking for an experienced cabinet maker / bench joiner to join our workshop team.
This is a hands-on role for someone who knows their way around a workshop and takes pride in making things properly. You'll be involved in taking work from drawings and prepared components through to assembly and finishing, working on a variety of bespoke furniture and joinery projects.
The role
You'll be working across the workshop, making and assembling furniture and joinery using both traditional woodworking methods and modern machinery.
The work will include:
- Making bespoke cabinets, furniture and joinery to a high standard
- Working from technical drawings and cutting lists
- Setting out, machining and assembling components accurately
- Using hand tools, power tools and conventional woodworking machinery
- Operating our CNC, edgebander, veneer press and other workshop machinery
- Working with sheet materials, veneers, solid timber and other furniture materials
- Checking your own work and making sure everything is accurate before it moves on
- Solving problems when things don't quite go according to the drawing
- Keeping your area and the workshop clean, organised and safe
- Helping with installation when required
- Working alongside the rest of the team to get jobs completed to the required standard and on time
Who we're looking for
We're looking for someone with solid experience in furniture making, cabinet making or bench joinery.
You should be comfortable working independently and be able to take a drawing and work out how to manufacture the piece rather than needing every stage explained.
You'll ideally have:
- Several years' experience working in a furniture or joinery workshop
- Strong bench joinery and cabinet-making skills
- Good knowledge of woodworking machinery
- Confidence working from technical drawings
- Good understanding of materials, construction and furniture-making techniques
- A high level of accuracy and attention to detail
- The ability to work independently and take responsibility for your work
- A practical approach to solving problems
- Good standards when it comes to quality, housekeeping and safety
Experience with CNC machinery is a strong advantage, although we're more interested in someone who is a genuinely good cabinet maker than someone who simply knows how to operate a CNC.
What we're offering
£44,000-£47,000 depending on experience.
You'll be joining an established workshop with good machinery and a varied range of work. We want someone who is interested in making quality furniture and joinery and who can become an important part of the workshop rather than simply filling a position.
If you're an experienced cabinet maker or bench joiner and are interested in finding out more, we'd be happy to have an informal conversation and show you around the workshop.
Pay: From £44,000.00 per year
Work Location: In person
