Job Overview
We are looking for an experienced Legal Assistant to join our busy Litigation Department in Portsmouth.
This is a varied, client-facing role supporting our fee earners with Personal Injury and Contested Probate matters. You will assist with the day-to-day progression of cases, communicate with clients and other parties, prepare legal documentation and provide general support to the department.
You will need previous experience working within Litigation, ideally Personal Injury and/or Contested Probate, or a similar area of law. Formal legal qualifications are not required for this role.
The role
Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:
- Supporting fee earners with the management of fast-track and multi-track claims
- Initial client contact and taking instructions
- Drafting relevant documents for proceedings
- Preparing court documents, trial bundles and costs documentation
- Briefing experts and counsel where required
- Communicating with clients and other parties both in writing and in person
- Recording time spent on fee-earning and other tasks
- Completing relevant departmental forms
- Keeping accurate hard-copy and electronic records
- Keeping up to date with relevant changes in legislation and government regulations
- Attending department meetings and undertaking relevant training
- Assisting and supporting other members of the team where necessary
- Providing reception cover
- Complying with the firm's procedures, Office Manual and relevant Law Society/Lexcel standards
About you
We're looking for someone who:
- Has previous experience working within Litigation, ideally Personal Injury and/or Contested Probate, or a similar area of law
- Has experience working within a legal environment
- Is confident and professional when dealing with clients
- Has excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Is organised and able to manage several priorities at once
- Has good attention to detail and produces accurate work
- Is comfortable preparing legal correspondence and documentation
- Has good IT and typing skills
- Is comfortable working in a busy environment
- Is able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
- Is reliable, professional and approachable
Formal legal qualifications are not required.

Working hours: 8.30am to 5pm (1 hour for lunch)
Work Location: In person (office only – no hybrid)
Pay: From £28,000.00 per year (depending on experience)
