Structural Steel Welder/Fabricator

About the role
MB Fabrication Ltd is looking for an experienced Welder/Fabricator to join our workshop team. The successful candidate will fabricate and weld structural steelwork and associated metalwork accurately, safely and to the required quality standards.
This role requires someone who can confidently read fabrication drawings, work independently when required and produce consistently high-quality work while meeting the production schedule.
Key responsibilities
- Fabricate and weld structural steel assemblies in accordance with fabrication drawings, specifications and production requirements.
- Read, understand and accurately work from engineering and technical drawings.
- Measure, mark out, cut, drill, grind, prepare, tack and weld structural steel components.
- Check dimensions, alignment and overall quality throughout the fabrication process.
- Ensure completed work meets the required dimensional tolerances and welding standards.
- Safely operate workshop equipment, including overhead cranes, abrasive wheels, saws, drills, air tools and hand tools, subject to appropriate training.
- Safely handle, move and store structural steel sections, plates and fabricated components.
- Follow the production schedule and instructions provided by the Welding/Fabrication Supervisor.
- Complete daily pre-use safety checks and submit the required inspection sheets.
- Maintain tools and equipment in good working order.
- Keep the workstation and surrounding workshop areas clean, safe and well organised.
- Work in accordance with relevant risk assessments, safe systems of work and health and safety procedures.
- Comply with all company policies, quality procedures and working practices.
- Carry out other reasonable duties within the employee’s experience and capabilities, as directed by management or the supervisor.
Essential requirements
- At least two years’ experience in structural steel or similar heavy fabrication.
- Proven welding and fabrication experience.
- Ability to read and accurately interpret fabrication and engineering drawings.
- Competent in the use of abrasive wheels, air tools and general fabrication equipment.
- Good measuring, marking-out and quality-checking skills.
- Strong attention to detail and pride in producing high-quality work.
- Reliable, punctual and able to work effectively as part of a team.
- Strong awareness of workshop health and safety.
- A good work ethic and the ability to follow production deadlines.
- Authorised to work in the United Kingdom.
Desirable requirements
- Recognised welding or fabrication qualifications.
- Valid forklift truck licence.
- Experience operating overhead cranes and lifting equipment. Training will be provided if not.
- Experience fabricating structural steel beams, columns, frames, stairs, platforms and associated metalwork.
- Relevant abrasive wheel, crane or manual-handling certification.
